Listen to Ektaji guide us through a self-exploration meditation, “Reality is Experienced in Silence!” from Chapter 24 of Nisargadatta Maharaj's book I Am That. As one takes the stand of the witness, the sense of being a meditator fades. What we call individuality, personality, manifest or unmanifest, are just words-like a mirage, they do not exist. Dive into the source from which words arise and disappear. That source is silence. That silence is reality. Let’s rest there, where no identity survives.

Let's do a self-exploration meditation on Reality is Experienced in Silence.

Let's sit comfortably with our eyes closed and relax.

Take the stand of the witness and relax.

Recognize the truth that when the eyes are closed for a while,

The meditator disappears.

The recognition of a person meditating with eyes closed disappears.

Recognize that in this long pause,

The listener of the meditation instructions had disappeared and it suddenly reappeared with the reappearance of sound.

This is reality that there is no continuous individuality.

There is no continuous person.

There is no continuous bhakti.

Are you able to realize this truth?

Who is the realizer?

Who is the recognizer of this truth?

Can you locate it?

Can you locate a permanently existing personality?

Can you locate a permanently existing individuality that is the recognizer or realizer of this truth?

Is the realizer of this truth manifested or unmanifested?

Is it vyakta or avyakta?

Is there a clear recognition that it's neither vyakta nor avyakta?

Is there a clear recognition that it's neither manifested nor unmanifested?

You cannot call it unmanifested because using the word unmanifest suggests or implies that there is something like the manifest.

But from your own experience,

It is evident that the so-called manifested person is not continuous,

Is not there at times.

If it is not there at times,

If it is not continuous,

Then is it valid to use the word manifested for it?

The word vyakta is merely a word.

The word manifested is merely a word.

There is no reality in it.

If there is no reality in the word manifest,

There is obviously no reality in its opposite word unmanifest.

Both are simply words without reality.

Is there a recognition that that which is neither manifest nor unmanifest is simply a mirage,

That which does not exist?

Is there a recognition that the realizer of the truth or the recognizer of the reality does not exist?

Is there acceptance that you do not exist?

That which does not exist cannot have qualities or cannot be without qualities.

It is neither sagun nor nirgun.

These are all simply words.

Nirgun,

Sagun,

Vyakta,

Vyakti are merely words,

Points of view,

Mental attitudes.

There is no reality in them.

Unmanifest,

Manifest,

Individuality,

Personality are all mere words,

Points of view,

Mental attitudes.

There is no reality in them.

Take a step beyond words and recognize the source from which they appear and into which they dissolve.

Dive into that source.

That silent source is where reality can be experienced because reality is beyond words.

The real is experienced in silence.

Let's simply be with the silence.

Be with reality.

Reality is experienced only in silence.
