How many of you did after a very long time?
Look at your state of mind right now.
How is it?
Is there agitation?
Is there any anger?
It's quiet and down right?
So we understand that by meditating this mind quietens down.
But what to do when in the day something happens,
You are in an agitated situation.
Maybe a friend,
Maybe some pressure from school,
Those who are studying,
Pressure from work for those who are working,
Maybe pressure in the family.
How do you deal with that?
How do you deal with that?
Three points.
First is tapas.
Acceptance of what is.
I am a student,
I have to complete these assignments.
This is acceptance of what is.
I am willingly going through it.
I may hate that subject now or I may hate that teacher but willingly going through it.
A difficult situation at work in the family.
Till the time in the mind there is a fight.
I don't like this,
Oh I don't like this person,
Oh he said this to me,
She said this to me.
Till the time there is tussle in the mind there is no acceptance here.
Have you noticed?
When does acceptance come?
When I drop this,
Oh he should have not done this,
She should have not done this.
This situation is not right.
That situation is wrong.
That tussle,
That war going on,
It's going on inside me only.
Have you noticed?
My only mind is boxing with my other mind.
Constant war is going on inside.
Till the time this war is on,
You will not find peace.
Few moments you meditate,
You will find the rest but then you are back to the war zone.
You are leading your life like a war.
Recognizing oh this is what I am doing to myself is the first step.
And then after I recognize what is the next step?
As in accept this situation is like this.
There is no acceptance only.
Tapas is willingly going through what is,
What is,
Is.
This is my karma.
I am in the US,
I have to do this right now and I am in this horrible situation.
Till the time in the mind it goes on,
Oh it should not have been like this,
It should have been like this,
You have not accepted it.
Acceptance is having a willingness here.
Whatever the situation is,
However difficult it is,
Doesn't matter.
I am going to willingly with a smile go through it.
Then the chitta chatter of the mind calms down.
Have you noticed?
When you accept this,
Ya kya kya kya,
Blah blah blah,
Quietens down.
And when this quietens down,
Any action you take is productive.
Have you noticed?
If you take an action with a quietened mind,
How is that action compared to an action with an agitated mind?
Tell me.
Which one is better?
With a quietened and calmer mind.
Bringing the mind to this calm state is called tapas.
In any situation,
It doesn't matter what the situation is,
It doesn't matter how difficult the person is,
It doesn't matter how much you want to acquire that thing and it is just unattainable for you right now.
Willingly going through what is,
Is tapas.
Yes,
That's the first step.
But is that sufficient?
The mind will again come up,
No?
Saying oh this happened but she did this,
Oh but now he is still doing this.
That is why Gurudev said second point is vairagya.
Vairagya is?
Dispassion.
Dispassion.
Dispassion with what?
All these attractions and cravings that will come up.
I have accepted this situation,
It is very difficult for me but I have accepted it.
Again another distraction will come up for my state of mind to go back to that ya kya kya kya blah blah blah blah blah state.
Have you noticed?
This happens in life.
You have accepted tomorrow morning is an exam.
I have to really study hard,
Come what may,
I have to get through this tough phase and what happens?
Your friend says come let's go party tonight.
Vairagya is dispassion to that which can again distract you from this calm state of mind to the and bring you to an agitated state.
It doesn't matter I will go for the party two hours,
I will come back and study later.
What happens?
After how many hours do you come back?
Ya.
You are gone for six to eight hours and then next morning when you are at the exam hall oh I hardly study two hours,
Two answers.
Now what do I do?
You have been in that situation.
Ya.
It is not just for the university students,
Even the others.
The exam of life.
It happens at work.
Yes.
So having dispassion Vairagya is extremely important.
Ya.
Once you have set a goal for yourself,
This is what I need to do.
The situation is tough and this is the way I am going to deal with it.
A distraction that comes along my way,
I have to be dispassionate to that.
Then only can I be productive in whatever I do,
Correct?
If I let distractions take me away,
Somebody says something and I go that way,
Finished.
I have moved away from my goal,
My direction.
Clear?
Tapas and Vairagya clear?
Is this sufficient?
No.
The third thing is required.
Sharanagati,
I put in my 100% to resolve this situation.
I put in my 100% to work with this person.
I put in my 100% to attain this thing.
But after a point I say I have done enough,
I let go of this craving or this feverishness inside me.
Are you seeing this?
Ya.
The feverishness eats you more than the activity itself.
How many have realized this?
The mind goes on and on and on and on and on.
That feverishness in the mind eats you more than the difficulty of that situation.
That is why surrender.
Surrender what?
Not the action.
Ya,
Surrender this feverishness that is going on in the mind.
That is Sharanagati,
Surrendering.
It's better to surrender consciously,
Being aware.
Ya,
Anyway at the end of it,
You surrender when?
Oh I give up,
This is not going to work.
This is the end of it.
Useless.
Ya,
Agitated state of mind surrender or a calmer state of mind surrender.
What do you want to do?
You decide.
When you have that calm surrender,
You feel yes I have done my 100%.
Now whatever has to happen will happen.
Ya.
So remember these three points.
Very important.
Tapas,
Vairagya and Sharanagati.
Tapas is accepting and willingly going through something,
Whatever it is.
Difficult situation,
Difficult person or an unattainable thing.
Vairagya is having dispassion to all destructions that can take me away from this particular goal of mine.
And third is surrender.
Ya,
Feverishness in the mind I surrender.
I let go.
Surrender is usually looked at as negatively or defeat.
Right.
This is a positive aspect of surrender.
Ya,
Where I give up all this feverishness so that I come out victorious.
Ya.
