Try hearing through your skin, seeing through your nose, or touching with your eyes. It's fun! In this meditation, we explore Synesthesia, "a neurological condition in which when one sense is activated, another unrelated sense is activated at the same time." This meditation is an attempt at synesthesia,

And I invite you to settle in.

You could be standing,

Seated,

Or lying down.

For some parts of this meditation,

You may want to close your eyes.

For others,

Maybe not.

But begin by relaxing,

And letting go of whatever was before this meditation,

And giving up on whatever could be after this meditation.

But understanding that you are only guaranteed this moment.

This is all that's real.

This is all that you can truly possess.

You can't spend time,

You can only use it.

And we'll use our time for meditation,

For settling in,

Becoming more still,

Becoming quieter,

Letting your thoughts be less focused.

Letting your body get heavy,

Not resisting the earth,

Not doing any effort posturally.

Feeling like a lump of clay,

Almost unformed.

Letting things be things,

And you are you,

Unmoved and barely moving.

Isn't that nice?

You might go to your breath as a gentle focus.

You're going to drift,

Your mind will get distracted by the firing of neurons in its natural way,

Unavoidable,

Expected,

And for the good of your health.

And you can come back from distraction,

It's not permanent.

You can hear my voice,

Feel the weight of your body,

Or just notice your breathing in and out,

Getting deeper in,

Longer out.

Let's play some games with our senses.

Examine your skin,

The organ of touch.

You might want to isolate a small swatch of skin,

Could be on your shin,

Your elbow,

Toe,

Anywhere.

Focus there,

And let's listen to what our skin can smell.

What could you smell through your skin?

Maybe your skin could smell the fabric softener on your clothes,

Or the distant bloom of a flower.

This may not happen in fact,

But you may understand it as a riddle that allows you to focus.

What might my skin smell?

What could it hear?

Does the patch of skin hear the vibration of air around it,

Or the thrum of blood under it?

Listen through your skin,

Breathing,

Letting your mind be still,

If perhaps a little confused.

That's good.

Explore the sensation in your ear.

What does your ear sense and feel and touch?

Could you feel the wax inside?

The warmth of the air?

An itch?

What can your ear touch?

What could your ear taste?

Do any of the sounds around you have a flavor,

A seasoning?

Do they remind you of a dish you eat?

What tastes are in your ear?

Breathing,

Staying at a slow and relaxed pace,

Returning always to the present moment.

My voice,

Your breathing,

The mass of your body.

Feel your tongue and lips.

May want to wiggle it a little,

Play games for a second.

What does your tongue see?

Can it see the back of your teeth,

The roof of your mouth?

If you're opening your mouth,

Could it see what's in front of you,

Like a snake does?

What is it here inside your mouth and outside?

Is there a vibration through your cheeks that it could perceive?

The thrum of blood and sensation,

Can it hear those things?

Breathing,

Quieting the mind.

This part you could do with your eyes open or closed.

What do your eyes touch?

What can they feel and sense physically and intimately?

Could your pupils touch the air or your eyelids?

Try to touch what your eyes perceive with your eyes.

Can your eyes smell anything?

With your eyes,

Could you smell a tree or perhaps your soap?

Look around,

Smelling,

Wondering,

And now just breathing.

Just enjoying the moment,

Being together,

Being still.

It's enough.

Finally,

We'll go to our nose.

What can your nose hear?

Your nose can resonate.

Could it also resonate from external sounds?

Can you hear through your nose,

Maybe just a whistling?

If you close your eyes,

Could you see through your nose?

Could you guide yourself around your room with just your nose,

Walking with your nose's sight?

Now returning,

Attending to your breath and your body,

Listening to my voice,

And feeling gratitude for all of your amazing,

Awesome senses.

Coming back.
