Begin by coming calmly and sweetly into the place you find yourself for this meditation.
You might allow your eyes to close and give your ears space to expand,
To reach out.
This will be a meditation and a time for listening.
And we'll use the sounds and their rhythms of the world inside us and around us as our meditative focus.
Begin settling down,
Coming in to your body and space.
See if you can't soothe yourself and relieve any tension just by directing your attention and maybe your breath to the spots of tightness.
Give those tight places the gift of releasing and letting go.
The first rhythm I want you to notice is your breath.
The pulse,
The framing of it in and out,
Just where it is without changing it.
Start to take stock of the rhythm of your breath and its natural music.
And with a generous awareness,
Without criticism,
Just for the sake of soothing yourself,
See if you can slow the rhythm of your breath down even 10%.
And notice that new regularity.
Maybe you fidget or wiggle on a regular cycle or twitch or squirm your toes as part of your natural metabolism of your body.
With a curious mind and a generous awareness,
Be interested in the differences between the rhythms of your natural vibrations and the rhythm of your breath,
How they complement and overlay each other.
Is your stomach and digestive system rumbling or turning at a particular pace?
You might notice those gentle perturbations in your belly existing in their own rhythm.
As the conductor of all these rhythms,
How do they fit with each other?
Are they independent?
Do they fit at all?
Just attend to and be curious about the rhythms of your breath and body and digestion.
See if you can identify your pulse.
Starting in your upper chest,
Maybe you find it there or notice it in your throat or belly or fingertips.
Try to find that rhythm.
The song and symphony of all of the beats of your body playing across each other.
Even your thoughts come at a rhythm,
A pace sometimes regular,
Sometimes irregular,
In and out with their own beat.
Notice them drifting in and out at the rhythm that they will.
And the way they align with the music of your muscles,
Your pulse,
Your digestion,
Your breath,
All fitting together in their quirky way.
Outside you,
Maybe there's a clock ticking.
Maybe birds singing.
Notice that rhythm,
Those rhythms.
You don't have to feel overwhelmed by the multiplicity of beats within you and outside you,
Just amused or curious or generously aware.
Maybe there's a periodic whoosh of cars going by.
Or breezes.
Allow them to be integrated into the symphony of your experience.
All right.
Are there any other noises in your context?
Are they rhythmic or irregular?
Like stock?
And cycle your awareness among the many rhythms you're discovering and noticing during this meditation.
Special counterpoint.
The rhythms inside you and other rhythms outside you.
Continue to observe how they fit together in their own precious,
Unique,
And unreproducible way.
Listening.
