This brief bedtime Shema offers a gentle transition from the fullness of the day into the quiet of night. Rooted in gratitude and forgiveness, it invites a soft unwinding—a release of what’s been carried and a return to simple presence. Together or alone, you might share a few calm breaths, a whispered "Shema," or a tender goodnight, allowing the day to settle gently behind you. Even without the longer rituals or stories, each gesture—a touch on the shoulder, a murmured blessing, a shared stillness—becomes its own prayer. The familiar rhythm of this practice creates a pocket of peace: a moment to let go, to forgive, and to remember that rest itself is holy. In this shortened form, the essence remains the same—a sacred pause where love, safety, and trust prepare the heart for sleep.

Letting go.

Whatever was this week,

This day,

This evening that you need to shake off,

Just shake it off.

Remove it from your focus.

Put it aside.

I'm into self.

What do you need?

Breathing.

Sitting,

Lying down.

Starting to let your eyes close.

Drifting.

Falling in.

Becoming heavy with light thoughts.

Deep inhale,

Slow exhale.

Just settling.

Giving up on the day that was.

Not addressing the day that could be.

That all this is still unknown and unknowable.

But you are here.

You have come.

Right where you need to be.

Breathe in deeply,

Exhale slowly.

In and out.

Using that as a focus when your mind wanders,

Because it does wander.

You could return using your breath,

Or my voice,

Or any other cue that will draw you into the sensations of this moment.

Moving from the cognitive to the sensory,

The generous awareness.

And a level of kindness towards yourself.

Beginning to forgive and let go.

All that was is no more.

And all the slights and injuries and elbows and insults,

They don't have any substance now.

You can carry them forward,

But that's your choice.

Or you can tentatively or fully forgive.

Letting go.

And knowing that you hurt people too.

You can be hurt,

You can give hurt.

And you forgive yourself.

Maybe eventually ask forgiveness.

Something to toy with,

Something to imagine for now.

Letting it slide.

Letting it decline,

Fall in.

May it be acceptable,

May it be so.

And your eyes start to get heavy.

The light starts to go dim.

And the day fades.

And you take stock.

A moment of gratitude to acknowledge all that is,

All that is shared in the web of creation,

The continuity of all things.

The shared universe,

The shared origin.

In part,

The shared destiny.

Take a moment to acknowledge that oneness.

And let it fill you with love and gratitude,

Appreciation.

Every moment.

Every moment each day and at night.

May it be set for you.

And you're protected,

Secured,

Rescued,

Covered by great wings,

Powerful shield,

Guarded by celestial forces.

And you are loved,

And lifted,

And safeguarded.

Breathing,

Taking it all in.

Going slowly,

Exhaling.

Maybe using the word cella on the exhale.

You lie down in peace.

So that when you sleep,

You will wake up peacefully.

Shielded and protected.

Rescued and guarded.

As you leave the conscious world so that you can peacefully return to it.

Breathing,

Just taking it in.

You may start to fall asleep.

You may not.

Just need to get out of the way.

Out of your own way.

And great and good forces are watching you now.

And they watched those before us.

They will guard those after us.

Just going slow.

Letting your mind get a little sticky.

A little upsy down.

And the universe is blessing you.

And the universe guards you.

And the universe is protecting you.

And the universe is shining down upon you with grace.

See if you can absorb that.

And the universe looks expectantly toward you to offer you peace.

And you can let go of all the efforts of the day.

All the worries and the strife.

All your questions,

You can lay down at your right hand.

With a great and good force responsible for doubt and wonder.

And all of your effort and muscle straining and intellect straining,

Just put down at your left side.

With the great good force responsible for effort and vigor.

And before you,

A light held through the darkness.

And behind you,

The great good force of healing.

Putting healing into your body.

And above you,

All things.

And around you,

All things.

Holding you.

Enjoying your sleep.

You probably have a few last movements to make.

A little bit of itching and fidgeting,

A stretch,

A yawn.

You might want to exhale with the word SELA.

Check any last things.

Start to get yourself ready.

If you're not ready,

Start to get ready.

You're not asleep already.

Just settling in.

Held with the universe.

Supported and cared for.

Known in a world without end.

Part of the universe that endures without a beginning or an end.

You are content within it.

You can trust your body to the loving universe with nothing to fear.
