Welcome to this special series and a journey through these sacred centers of wisdom called chakras.

Our bodies are a complex configuration of energy.

We also have 72,

000 nadis or energy channels.

Think of them like highways along which vital energy or prana travels.

When the nadis meet at different points in the body,

They form a triangle.

The Sanskrit word for this triangle is chakra and literally translates as wheel or disc referring to a spinning sphere of bioenergetic activity emanating from the major nerve ganglia branching forward from the spinal column.

There are seven of these wheels stacked in a column of energy that spans from the base of the spine to the top of the head.

There are also minor chakras in the hands,

Feet,

Fingertips and shoulders for a total of 114 chakras throughout the body.

The chakra system according to one expert,

Ms.

Anodea Judith,

And I will reference and also quote her work throughout,

Is a seven-leveled philosophical model of the universe.

It is the seven major chakras that correlate with basic states of consciousness and it is these that we will together examine here and in each of the next several episodes.

The chakra system originated in India more than 4000 years ago in the ancient literature of the Vedas.

Evidence of the chakras is also found in the Upanishads,

The yoga sutras of Patanjali and perhaps most thoroughly in the 16th century by an Indian yogi in a text called the Sat chakra Nirupana.

The chakra system was passed down through an oral tradition by the Indo-European people.

It was traditionally considered an Eastern philosophy until New Age authors like Anodea and others resonated with this wisdom and began writing about the chakras,

Linking areas of the body and psyche with associated metaphysical realms and describing how each chakra affects our psychology and our emotions and behaviors as human beings.

While chakras are not physical entities that can be seen or held,

They are said to have a powerful effect upon the body as they express the embodiment of spiritual energy on the physical plane.

The activities in the various chakras influence the patterns manifested in our lives,

Chronic physical ailments,

The way in which we think,

Feel and handle situations that life presents us,

And also the shape of our physical bodies.

Just as we see the wind through movement of the leaves and branches,

The chakras can be seen by what we create around us.

By using techniques such as yoga,

Breathing,

Bioenergetics,

Which is a system of physical and psychological therapy that increases well-being by releasing blocked physical and psychic energy,

Physical exercise,

Meditation and visualization,

We can in turn influence our chakras,

Our health and our lives.

When healthy,

These energy centers spin in a clockwise direction,

Drawing in energy from the universal energy field to continually revitalize your whole being.

Once they spin at different speeds,

Each emits a different light frequency,

Which is seen as a different color.

Each of the major chakras is associated with one of the seven layers of the aura.

The first chakra is associated with the layer closest to your physical body,

The second next to this,

And so on.

For your chakras to function at their best,

It is important that they remain in balance and open.

Out of balance or blocked,

You may experience the physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra and its characteristics.

Let's begin with the Muladhara chakra,

Also known as the base or root chakra,

Situated at the base of the spine.

This chakra is your energetic foundation.

It helps support you as you find your path in life,

To be responsible for yourself and your choices.

It influences your ability to put down roots and to nourish yourself both physically and spiritually.

Its main function is to keep you grounded in the physical world and alive.

The Muladhara chakra helps you connect with the vehicle that carries you on your journey throughout life,

Your physical body.

The basic needs of this chakra relate to issues of trust or mistrust,

Nourishment,

Safety,

And feeling a right to be here in the world.

The root chakra is associated with matter in its most dense form.

Its associated element is earth,

The most solid of the elements.

When your root chakra is in balance,

Energy flows in two directions.

The chakra releases energy downward like a lightning rod,

While at the same time drawing energy upward from the earth.

As a result,

You feel secure and safe.

Life is stable and filled with active positive energy,

And your patience and sense of community brings rewarding relationships.

Some of the characteristics of this chakra in balance are good health,

Vitality,

Being well-grounded,

Feeling comfortable in your body,

Having a sense of trust in the world,

And a feeling of safety and security,

As well being able to relax and be still,

Stability,

Prosperity,

And right livelihood.

Yet how does a chakra become blocked or out of balance?

Chakras can have a depletion of energy flow or too much energetic activity.

Either will manifest into different outcomes.

When a chakra is low in energy,

You'll have difficulty expressing the particular qualities associated with that chakra.

When a chakra is overactive,

Its qualities become a dominant force in a person's life.

This can have both physical and emotional effects.

For example,

If your Mulhadara chakra is underactive,

It can manifest as depression and insecurity.

If there's too much energy,

This can be experienced as fearlessness without precaution or hoarding behavior if you need more to feel secure.

And of course,

Experiencing too much stress,

Physically or mentally,

May cause one or more of your chakras to be out of balance,

As well as personal habits such as eating unhealthy food or self-destructive behaviors,

As well as poor physical alignment or posture.

Other imbalances in the energetic flow of your Mulhadara chakra can cause you to feel as though you don't belong.

You may feel disoriented and indecisive,

Unable to connect well with others.

You may struggle with your physical health,

Personal finances,

Jobs,

And relationships,

And feel tired most of the time.

An over-concern with survival and security can manifest in a workaholic approach to your career and in difficulties in connecting with the spiritual side of life.

If you experience such imbalances in your Mulhadara energy,

It can be helpful to look back at trauma in your early life,

As well as cultural conditioning,

Limiting beliefs,

Restrictive or exhausting habits,

Physical or emotional injuries,

Or even a lack of attention can contribute to chakra blockage.

The traumas and abuses that may affect this first chakra include birth trauma,

Abandonment,

Physical neglect.

For example,

Perhaps you were not nurtured as well as you could have been,

Or felt that you did not fit in with your family or community.

You may feel abandoned,

Particularly if you were adopted,

If one of your parents were not emotionally available to you,

Or if you suffered the loss of a parent or parental divorce while young.

Major illness or surgery,

Physical abuse or a violent environment,

And also inherited traumas.

For example,

Parents' survival fears,

Such as Holocaust survivors,

War veterans,

And poverty conditions.

Early traumas can amplify later upsets in life,

Such as a breakup of a relationship,

The loss of a job,

Or a change in living conditions.

Identifying and balancing molodara energy through meditation helps you to be grounded through what can be the whirlwind of life,

And to help develop a stable posture and steadiness of mind.

Through awareness and attention to your physical needs and in the practice of self-care habits and rituals,

You equip yourself to function optimally on a day-to-day basis as you develop your inner world and give life to creative and spiritual ideas.

And a question that often arises,

Can an unbalanced or blocked chakra affect your health?

The location of a chakra that is out of balance may affect the parts of your body in close proximity to that chakra.

This includes your organs,

Bones,

Joints,

And tissues near that area.

In the physical body,

The root chakra governs the immune and skeletal systems and the lower digestive tract.

An imbalance in energy here could manifest in chronic fatigue syndrome,

IBS,

Or irritable bowel syndrome,

Constipation or hemorrhoids,

Obesity or weight issues,

Arthritis,

Foot,

Knee or leg problems,

Poor balance,

And lower back pain or sciatica.

Imbalances in the chakras may also cause an emotional imbalance.

In the Muladhara chakra,

Emotionally you may find yourself compensating for a lack of grounding by becoming rigid and unable to contemplate alternatives.

If you are overly grounded,

You can also find change difficult and you may become controlling and lacking in imagination and initiative.

And imbalance may lead to physical disease and illness,

Musculoskeletal issues,

And mental health challenges like depression and anxiety.

Working with this chakra helps to establish healthy grounding as well as to improve your energy levels,

Well-being,

And inner strength.

The health of your root chakra sets the foundation on which all of your other chakras rest.

A great way to promote balance in any chakra is to create alignment in your physical body through breathing practices to encourage the flow of energy and to unlock reserves of energy within you.

Contribution and visualization techniques,

Yoga postures,

And specific healing practices for your root chakra to reconnect with your body in physical activity and movement such as aerobics,

Dance,

Weight training,

Running,

Physical touch,

And also hatha yoga.

You may also wish to have a closer look at your earliest relationship with both parents and in particular the bonding experience you felt and how you may reclaim your right to be here,

To have a place in the world and good footing as you walk your path with confidence.

Just being aware of the possible imbalances in your root chakra can bring greater attention to what you need to do to care for these specific needs,

To examine,

For example,

What the cause of an imbalance may be,

And then to correct this.

I have written a meditation specific for your Muladhara chakra that I would like to guide you through shortly.

You can also find a link for this meditation separately in the description.

Something else that many find to be of help is the use of affirmations and mantras.

You may wish to repeat these affirmations here with me and I will also include them in the description.

Abundance for the root chakra may include,

I am a beloved child of the universe and I deserve love,

Peace,

And security.

I open myself to receive the abundance of the universe.

I am open to receive and accept love.

I am open to receive and be nurtured by the powerful energy of the earth.

I am a physical being and value my physical presence.

I resolve to take care of my body and accept it as it is today.

I love my body and trust its wisdom to keep me healthy.

I value my body as the physical temple in which I live and I will aim to provide for its needs in terms of healthy food,

Rest,

Activity,

And gentle nurturing.

Please listen on as I guide you in a simple meditative experience specific to opening your Muladhara chakra,

To optimize your consciousness here at the root level,

As well as your physical and cognitive and emotional wellbeing.

And finally,

I wanted to thank Anodea Judith,

Her book Eastern Body,

Western Mind,

Psychology,

And the Chakra System as a Path to the South.

I have cited and taken direct quotes from her teachings on what may well be the most comprehensive modern book written on the chakras.

You'll find a link to her book in the description.

Now I invite you to dive in with me to this beautiful meditation.

Namaste.

In a seated or standing posture,

First connect with the ground beneath you.

If you can go outdoors and sit or stand on the earth with your bare feet,

This will be helpful for you as you ground yourself and as you prepare to receive,

To draw in the earth's energy up through your feet.

Imagine drawing the energy upwards from deep within the core of the earth,

Up through the bottom of your feet.

Feel this energy rising upwards,

Flowing upwards into your legs,

Into your hips,

Your back,

And your front body.

You may notice your breathing change.

Using deeper breaths.

Each inhalation aids in the floating of this beautiful energy up through your feet,

Up into your root chakra at the base of your spine,

And infusing it with a beautiful vortex of light.

And then you draw from the energy of the earth,

Higher,

Upwards,

Into your chest and upper back,

Into your arms,

Your neck,

Your shoulders.

And into your head.

See here in the awareness of your breath.

And as you continue to pull upwards,

Drawing into you the earth's energy,

And the feeling of being one.

Even in yourself,

In your physical presence,

And in the safety and security of your life.

You are completely supported.

You are guided in the comfort of your breath,

And in the experience of now.

To be able to draw from the earth.

To be grounded in your life.

To be certain of all that supports you.

As you move through life.

Let this mantra remind you of your infinite connection to what will always be your faithful support in life.

I am confident in all of life to support and nourish me.

You may wish to also experience the flow of energy returning into the earth.

A cycle,

Energy floating upwards into you.

And your out-breath signaling the beautiful cycle of energy that flows downward,

Down into the core of the earth.

You may wish to remain here a little longer,

In the breathing cycle,

And the flow of the earth's energy rising up into you.

And then as you exhale,

Being witness to the return of energy.

You are in perfect exchange with the earth.

Your mooladhara chakra strengthen with the balance of inflow and outflow.

Sensing your being.

And in support of all of you.

Notice how this chakra feels.

How it is revitalized.

How you are in harmony.

With the nourishing of your being.

With the beautiful vortex of energy.

Gently,

Slowly bring your attention to how you feel in your body.

What energy,

What life force moves through you.

Now and as you continue in the rest of your day.

When you need to feel more grounded,

More support,

More cherished,

Return here to the space of this beautiful chakra,

And to the powerful means of experiencing your oneness with the earth's vibrational frequency.

And all of its grounding presence for you.

And in your life.

When you are ready,

Open your eyes,

Feel the presence as you are solid with the earth.

As you walk through life.

Namaste.
