Zugunruhe is a German word meaning "restlessness in migratory birds." This same restlessness can also be seen in humans as our souls call us to take flight into life. I will share part of a children's story written by Dr. Michael Kinsey called, "Dreams of Zugunruhe." Then we will move into a poem I wrote that I hope brings you inspiration. I would like to also thank Chris Collins for providing the music which accompanies the poem and brings it to life. Have a beautiful day!

Hi,

And thank you for joining me today for our storytime talk and inspirational poem.

I am grateful that you're here.

Today's talk is about the word,

Zugunru,

Which is a German word.

It is defined as the restlessness in migratory birds.

As birds who migrate become awake and aware of their call to take flight,

It is this inner call that leads to their path,

This restlessness which calls them,

And they are called to the sky to take flight.

Today I'd like to share part of a story based on this phenomenon.

The book is called Dreams of Zugunru by Dr.

Michael Kinsey.

He has given me permission to read part of his story here for our community.

It is based upon the migratory call of birds known as arctic terns.

Then I will do a brief talk and lead us into an inspirational poem that I wrote based upon this concept and hope that it brings inspiration to you as well.

First,

Let's read from Dreams of Zugunru by Dr.

Kinsey.

Little tern have faith that you'll know what to do when Zugunru visits you.

For Zugunru is the word describing what's inside a bird that makes it want to spread its wings and cherish flight above all things.

You'll fly in ways that can't be learned.

It's then you'll know that you're a tern.

But mother,

What then if my soul prefers to stay forever next to yours?

I don't see how I can compare what I have here to what's out there.

Little tern,

No other creature gets to see so much of Earth's rich majesty.

Some 40,

000 miles of sights await all terns who take to flight.

You'll see the globe from pole to pole and feel true freedom in your soul.

Adventure is our deepest need and reason why we eat and breed.

But mother,

Can't I leave with you and father?

Do you feel I'll be a bother?

And does this mean I'll someday go to see that distant patch of snow?

Little tern,

The journey you will take is one that arctic terns must make alone.

The places you will travel to are well beyond our current view.

But mother,

Alone and far that makes me scared,

I don't think I will be prepared to fly so far without you near.

Perhaps I'm meant to stay right here.

Little tern,

What you cannot yet understand is terns are not designed for land.

Though leaving home can seem a curse,

To starve and freeze hears even worse.

What's more is that your spirit dies as long as you avoid the skies.

We're all prepared by nature,

Dear,

But I will help you face your fear.

Just as this young arctic tern was being called into places he had never been before,

We as humans also experience this same migrational call of our souls if we listen to that call.

Listening to the call connecting with our inner wisdom and our soul's guidance can lead us into unknown places.

When this happens,

It can feel frightening and beyond our control and moves us past where we are comfortable.

But if we listen to that call from our soul and step away from that which is comfortable,

We grow wings that can help us fly.

I share this poem with you now,

My Soul's Migration,

As a way to inspire you on your soul's journey that you may also be inspired to find your wings and to take flight.

I paired the poem with the musical composition by Chris Collins called Rebirth.

The two together,

The poem that I wrote and Chris's song evoke the drama of learning to take flight.

Thank you so much for listening.

I'm grateful that you're here and I hope you enjoy this poem.

Oh,

Spirit.

Oh,

Divine.

When your voice calls my name,

My inner light shines and drives me forward on my path.

Yet,

I'm afraid.

Just a voice inside leading the way.

By the shores that I know is where I really want to stay.

But your voice inside is louder than any voice that man makes.

Zugunru,

Like a bird called into flight,

An inner migration towards your shining light.

I fly with the wind lifted by your divine voice,

Mapping my soul's migration path,

Leading me back home.

When I think too much with my chattering mind,

It drowns out your call and makes my path hard to find.

Hush that talk and quiet my mind.

My wings know where to fly.

Even when my sight is blind.

Zugunru,

This restless inner call.

My soul remembers the way imprinted by my ancestors before me,

Who now show me where to go.

My body,

My soul will not stop their flight until they catch glimpse once again of your divine light.

And that's when my soul shall be set free,

No voice at all,

But one ecstatic memory.

On this day and the days to come,

May your journey be filled with light from your soul that calls you back home to yourself and that you might take flight.

Have a beautiful day.

I'm grateful that you've been with me and with our community.

Namaste.

I guess you can interpret this is different ways. I just lost my one of my favorite aunts and it reminded me of death.
