You may be familiar with inner child work, but we are actually made up of many parts. This powerful meditation invites you to check in with your parts, or inner council, so your inner world comes into harmony. This meditation is inspired by Richard C. Schwartz' Internal Family Systems Model (IFS) and Stephen Harrod Buhner's Inner Council Exercise. Background music contains binaural beats—use headphones to receive the full benefit. **Now updated with more time to spend with your parts!**

Welcome to your inner council meditation.

This meditation will help you resolve internal conflict and move with more grace and ease in the world.

The you that is you is made up of different parts.

Some are loud and fearful,

Keeping you stuck,

Addicted to anxiety or sadness.

Others are so tired of being shut down that they've given up even though they know the secrets to your deepest desire,

Joy,

And wholeness.

We don't know how many parts we have.

Our parts can get trapped in endless arguments and decision loops.

But even in our deep pain,

We know they are trying to help.

They are wanting safety,

Growth,

Peace,

And joy.

When we listen,

Patiently and genuinely,

To what they have to say,

We are able to orchestrate harmony among all the parts.

In this meditation,

We will go to our inner council and invite some of our parts to speak to us.

This brings harmony to our inner and outer worlds and brings us closer to moving through life with ease as if we're floating on water.

To get started,

Take a few deep breaths.

Inhale into your belly,

Into your chest,

And exhale,

Letting it go,

Pressing the air out of your belly.

Another deep breath in,

And exhale it out.

And allow your eyes to close.

We'll start by relaxing our body with a body scan.

Starting at your toes,

Notice if there's any constriction,

And allow it to release.

Move up to your knees,

Up through your thighs to your hips,

Checking for any tension,

And allow yourself to let go.

Move up through your low back,

Your belly,

Your ribs,

Your chest,

And pausing at your upper back,

Checking for any tension,

And allowing everything to relax.

Come up through your neck,

Your jaw,

Your lips,

Your nose,

Your ears,

Your temples,

And then bring your awareness to the crown of your head.

Let go of any constriction,

And be fully relaxed.

Now take your consciousness on a journey.

You take a train to a small town,

So small it's not listed on maps.

You walk down a cobblestone road until you reach a beautiful building.

It is pristine,

Secluded.

You scan a keycard and walk into an elevator.

The elevator takes you up,

Up,

Up,

Until you are nestled in the clouds.

On your floor,

The doors open and you exit.

You unlock another room.

Inside,

The room is shaped as a perfect circle.

You are the only one who may enter here.

It is a sacred space.

Look around.

What colors do you see?

Is there warm light shining in the windows?

What shape are the windows?

What color is the light?

All the parts of you are here.

These parts might be your inner child,

Your inner parent,

Or your inner infant.

They might be your critic,

Your soul,

Or your champion.

One might be your source energy,

Your higher self,

Or they might be the wise sages in your body,

Your heart,

Your gut.

They might be your brilliant senses,

Your eyes,

Your nose,

Your tongue,

Your ears,

Your skin,

Or your feeling.

Maybe you have other parts too.

And around the room are a series of nooks where each part lives.

There is one part that has something they would like to say.

Now you may invite out one part,

The one that has something it would like to say.

It comes out of the nook.

You step up close,

Allowing your hearts to come into coherence.

Now describe what does this part look like?

What's its name?

What is this part feeling?

This part has its own consciousness and past.

What are its memories?

The first thing that pops into your mind is exactly right.

Now ask this part,

What would you like to tell me?

And it answers right away.

What does it say?

Right now you are feeling the Simply listen.

Let the part speak,

Whether with words,

Pictures,

Or just a shared knowing.

You might continue to listen or you might respond,

Asking a question,

Continuing the dialogue.

If your part brought up a fear,

You might go deeper and ask,

And then what?

And then what?

You might also get to know this part.

Ask,

Is its role very hard to do?

What are its hopes and dreams for you?

How has this part benefited you?

Be sure to acknowledge it and its good intentions.

What does this part need from you?

And finally,

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Now take a moment to thank this part.

Give it a hug and allow it to go back to its space.

Now you step further around the room.

Is there another part who would like to speak?

Once you've reached it,

Pause and allow it to step out of its nook.

Come up close,

Allowing your hearts to come into coherence.

Now describe what does this part look like?

What is its name?

What are its feelings?

This part also has its own consciousness and past.

What are its memories?

The first thing that pops into your mind is exactly right.

Now ask,

What would you like to tell me?

And it answers right away.

What does it say?

What is its meaning?

What is its meaning?

Now simply listen.

Let it speak with words,

With pictures,

Or with a knowing.

And how do you respond?

You might ask a question.

If this part brought up a fear,

You might go deeper and ask,

And then what?

And then what?

Or get to know this part a little bit better.

Ask,

Is its role very hard to do?

What are its hopes and dreams for you?

How has this part benefited you?

Be sure to acknowledge it,

Its good intentions.

What does this part need from you?

And finally,

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Now thank your part,

Give it a warm hug,

And allow it to go back to its space.

Know that you can come back here anytime.

The more you listen to these parts,

The safer they will feel to speak.

They will come into your day to day.

They will tap you softly and patiently,

Full of trust.

You must keep any promise you make to them.

They don't respond to yelling or threats.

When you create a trusting,

Loving relationship with your inner council,

You will flow to decisions more freely.

Grow in worthiness and love for yourself,

And embody your soul's purpose in the world.

When you nurture your relationship with them,

They will work in harmony,

Bringing you your greatest good.

You may choose to repeat this meditation weekly or even daily,

Until consulting your inner council becomes second nature.

Wow that was incredible. My first part that showed up was my 12 yr old self. He was scared and wanted a hug. Next part was Fear and he made me feel like I was on a playground merry go round just everything spinning. He was afraid about the dreams I had last night. Using dreams that maybe I would fall back into my old habits. I’ll need to do this one more and more. I’ve only experienced this one other time the “whirlwind” and that was with a therapist doing a similar IFS meditation. Thank you.

This was wonderful and I can’t wait to listen again to sharpen the details of my room with the nooks. It was fun, really, to add windows (my room was initially vague and in shadow) and then the nooks (oooh! Look who’s in there!)… thank you for this lovely insightful experience.
