Embrace Your Grief
by Dana Damara
Too often we hold onto grief as if it were a badge of honor. In fear of falling apart. But grief truly is the one emotion that alchemizes energy into love, when handled properly and with care. Embrace grief, allow it to wash over you and feel into the power of love after this meditation.

Hi there,
My name is Dana DiMara.
Welcome to Insight Timer.
I wanted to bring a meditation to you on grief.
I know sometimes we look for those meditations on happiness and joy and calm.
And while I believe that those are very important,
I also believe that sometimes we don't honor grief enough and we end up bypassing it only to then create later issues of unresolved grief that turns into anger or frustration or resentment or illnesses.
I believe that when we leave an emotional imbalance to right itself or we pay little attention to it,
It becomes a physical disease.
So this meditation is on feeling into and allowing yourself to acknowledge grief.
So when you're ready,
I want you to find a comfortable seat and close your eyes and just take a few deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth.
Make sure when you breathe out through the mouth,
You allow the jaw to open up completely.
It's almost like what we call in yoga a lion's breath.
So we just,
And then I encourage you to just take some long deep breaths and maybe one of your hands are on your heart.
Maybe neither one of them,
Wherever your hands are comfortable,
But understand that the heart is where grief is held.
So continue to take long deep breaths in through the nose and out through the nose,
But focus your awareness and attention on the heart.
So the heart is a beautiful space in the body,
The physical body,
The emotional body and the subtle body.
It's the first thing that we look for when we're looking for human life or incarnation.
And mystically,
It holds every story ever written about you and your ancestors.
And the heart is known to be so resilient because it can hold just an infinite amount of love,
But it also holds grief.
So the heart holds love and compassion and forgiveness and it emanates out miles in front of us.
Some scientists have actually come up with calculations.
I just as a mystic like to think it's infinite.
And the heart also holds grief and sadness,
Abandonment,
Feelings of neglect,
Moments in time where we've just said,
Oh,
I'll deal with that later.
And over time,
What happens is that grief when left unresolved,
Hardens the heart,
Creates unnecessary boundaries or angstiness,
For lack of a better word.
It blocks us off from true connection.
And it keeps us in an energetic isolation away from love.
So in this moment where you're breathing into the heart,
I want you to just recall a moment in time where you felt deep grief.
Maybe it was the loss of a loved one or a loss of your own innocence.
Maybe there was betrayal,
Words left unsaid,
Forgiveness not attended to.
Whatever this moment in time that has held your heart in grief,
I want you to sit with it for a minute,
A minute as if you were sitting with your own self.
Feel the ways that when you shine the light and illuminate that grief,
That moment,
How it begins to expand.
Sometimes we're afraid to let go,
Unsure of what will happen.
What if I can't stop crying?
Who will be here to hold my grief?
The answer is your heart.
Your heart is so strong and powerful,
It will hold your grief.
But when you let go of that grief,
When you cry,
When you allow emotions to pass through the heart,
The heart is freed to love.
And so allow these spaces that have held grief,
A remembrance of feeling neglected or feeling left alone to just wash away from your body.
Allow the heart to travel through the rest of your body where you're holding on to grief or it's turned into resentment or anger or fear.
Maybe that energy is traveled to your hands or your face.
Maybe even the way you step in the world has become hardened.
Let the energy of the heart and the release of that grief travel to these spaces in your body that have manifested into something else and allow the heart to alchemize that grief.
When we allow our bodies,
Our energy sources,
Our subtle body or nervous systems to take on this type of movement of energy,
We free ourselves to become that which we are,
Which is love.
Allow these feelings to flow through you as if it were unlocking some beautiful corridor to the vault of your heart.
Allow the tears to flow.
Allow the energy to move through this proverbial dam that you have just unlocked in your heart space.
The body knows every story ever told about you and the heart is really the key that will allow for you to make space for more love as if it wasn't already available.
Feel in the body where you start to feel maybe tingling or prickly feelings or a wave of heat or even sometimes we feel like a whoosh through the body.
Maybe at some point you might want to stand up and shake your hands out or shake your feet out or make a sound.
This is the somatics of the body wanting you to actually release this energy that is blocking you from love.
Allow that to happen.
Grief is a very powerful emotion,
Sometimes avoided.
When you find this space where you can come back to a breath,
Then do that.
If you feel like you need more space to move through this energy,
Then please,
Please pause the recording and continue to move through the energy.
Understand that this is also a practice that you can come back to over and over again.
In fact,
I recommend it.
But when you have come to a place where you're settled and you feel like you have moved through these pieces of yourself that have been avoided,
Take one hand and place it on your heart.
And then take your other hand and place it on top of that hand as if you were holding your heart in your hands.
Remembering that you have this source,
This connection to love,
To spirit,
To God,
To the divine.
And all grief does is make your heart stronger.
Grief is a salve that allows you to move through any stagnation or remnants of the heart,
Reminding you of how strong and resilient the heart and love truly is.
Honoring this place of grief for yourself as many times as you have to come back,
Keep coming back,
Keep coming back,
Keep alchemizing to love.
I want to honor you for your courage,
Your bravery to be here today.
This is not always an easy meditation to move through,
But a very potent and powerful one.
So I want to thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
I hope you have a beautifully blessed day.
Namaste.

Note for top: These words seemed to write themselves as I your track just ended…. I searched “grief” track out of this desperation just to soften the pain right under the skin of my being as I could feel the anger and tears coming but without a cushion of comfort. I scrolled and found you needing a not-to-short not-to-long net of love to embrace the space around me. It’s peculiar (although we all know probably not) my finger accidentally pushed this to play as I was scrolling… so without a doubt I went with it. I was hopeful there would just be a most sincere voice without music. And though honestly, this first time, my mind is so blanketed in gray, I did not hear or get to practice some parts of this beautiful session… I cried deeply and held my heart in love knowing I am not alone in any way in this world. I know I received what I was meant to at this point in my process and feel so thankful to have found a perfect jewel for me in this moment. The excitement (as excited as a person can be looking for a grief meditation! Lol) to have this lovely poetic expression of all that is authentic and so much has cradled my soul…is received deeply with so much gratitude, Dear One. I appreciate your kindness and compassion shared with so many of us with our hands open and longing to be closed. Namasté.

Exactly what I needed, thank you. The part where you said that we ARE love was particularly potent for me.
