For Wiccans,
Pagans,
And witches,
Collecting moon water is a wonderful activity for connecting with the divine,
And it can be done one or more times each month.
In its most organic form,
Moon water is simply water that has been charged by the energy of the moon.
So,
If you place a container of water outside under the moonlight for a certain period of time,
You have,
By definition,
Moon water.
Accompanying this with ritual doesn't make the water more effective or potent,
But it immeasurably increases the significance of this spiritual practice.
Rituals allow us to attune to any workings more effectively,
Thereby elevating our connection to and understanding of them.
In this way,
Wiccan and pagan rituals are quite similar to yoga,
In that simply practicing the asanas is fine and adequate,
But understanding why we do them elevates everything to a new level.
For making moon water,
You will need water and a container for it,
Your intention or intentions.
That's it,
But if you have any of the following,
Use them for an added benefit.
A candle,
Preferably white and new.
Any form of incense,
And something in which to burn it.
Smudge or palo santo sticks also work nicely.
Fresh herbs,
Crystals.
For the water,
I do recommend that it be fresh.
Beyond that,
Your choice of water will be based on personal preference.
Some like using spring,
Purified,
Or distilled water.
Those are great choices,
Especially if you intend to consume the water,
Which we'll get into in a bit.
Fresh is the key,
Meaning something other than leftover water in a mop bucket or dish water.
For the container,
Glass is always best,
Especially if you're going to be keeping the water indefinitely.
An example of this would be,
I have two jars of moon water that I charged under the full moon on the night of Samhain in 2020.
There won't be another full moon at Samhain until 2039,
So this water is very special to me.
I keep it in glass jars that are tightly sealed,
And it will never be consumed.
Regardless,
Always start with a clean container.
Your intention is a personal choice that should be aligned with the particular lunar phase under which you'll be collecting your water.
Here are a few examples.
The new moon represents new beginnings,
Fresh ideas,
And setting intentions.
The first quarter moon is about forward motion and leaving the past behind.
The waxing gibbous moon is a period of reaffirmation,
Inviting us to pause and observe.
The full moon is the moon's highest energy level,
And all workings benefit from this phase.
The waning gibbous moon represents letting go and releasing.
The last quarter moon calls us to organize,
Prepare,
Look ahead,
And rest.
To begin,
Energetically cleanse your container with smoke of incense or perform a sound cleansing with a singing bowl.
Fill with water and seal the top.
You might choose to label the vessel with the date,
Lunar phase,
And some notes on your intention,
But this is completely optional.
Next,
Place the container where it will literally be bathed by moonlight.
Make sure this is a place where both you and the container will not be disturbed,
Such as a patio table.
Putting it just below a window is fine,
Especially if you have inclement weather or nosy neighbors.
If you wish to incorporate crystals and or herbs,
Those can be placed around your container.
Herbs of the moon that are particularly aligned with the full moon include mugwort,
For psychic abilities,
Lavender,
For healing,
Rosemary,
For purification,
Jasmine,
For love and prophecy,
Nutmeg,
For good fortune and psychic awareness,
And fennel,
For protection and healing.
Crystals of the moon,
Again,
Those particularly aligned with the full moon,
Include moonstone,
Which harnesses lunar energy,
Citrine,
For abundance,
Obsidian,
For protection,
And clear quartz,
For clarity and amplification.
By the way they are formed in the earth,
Each crystal is programmed with certain energies that can be harnessed for healing,
Protection,
Strength,
And many other things.
Charging your crystals under the full moon is a way of giving your energy allies a refreshing bath.
With both crystals and herbs,
Choose those that are most energetically aligned with the current moon phase,
As well as your intention.
Some people will choose to add crystals or herbs directly to the water that will be charged.
For the most part,
There's nothing wrong with this,
Provided that the water will not later be consumed.
With herbs,
You should always be aware of any potential side effects of using them systemically or topically.
Some crystals are not safe for water,
And by that I mean that water can be harmful to their structure or exterior,
Or cause them to release substances that can be harmful or even toxic.
A general rule is this,
When in doubt,
Don't.
Next,
Light the candle and the incense.
Make sure you use the incense to smudge yourself so as to cleanse your chakras and give yourself an energetic blessing,
Along with protection.
Ground in center,
Then set your intentions.
Once you have everything ready,
Raise your open palms up to the moon,
And chant the following,
The moon nurtures us,
The moon sustains us,
The moon watches over us,
The moon blesses us,
The moon gives us peace.
The following invocation may be used.
Within,
Without,
Above and below,
Mother moon,
Do now your children know.
To you do we sing,
On this your night,
Beneath your glow our magic takes flight.
Mother moon,
Your majesty I see,
On this night when you come to me.
Softest light,
Love and might,
I feel your presence here this night.
By many names you are known,
Silver goddess,
Mother of all creation,
Guardian of nature,
Protector of the Wicca.
Mother moon,
In your beauty and elegance,
Guide and watch over me as you do the tides.
Hallow my intentions and this water with your energy,
For my highest good and to the harm of none,
So mote it be.
At the conclusion of your ritual,
Visualize any leftover energy you have gathered for the working,
Returning to the earth,
Where it will be available for you again in the future.
I recommend allowing your water to charge for a minimum of one to three hours,
If you're able to do so.
You might choose to sit with it during this time,
To read,
Meditate or simply relax under the splendor of the moon.
Some practitioners will leave their water out overnight,
However longer doesn't necessarily equal stronger.
Your intention and the magic that resides naturally in you will join forces with the moon to give you exactly what you are needing.
Whatever length of time you choose,
It's best to bring everything inside before the sun rises.
Solar energy is powerful and wonderful,
But it offers us a different form of blessing.
The moon's energy is what we're specifically tapping into for this working.
Back to consumption for a moment.
If you have a bottle of drinking water,
Or tea for example,
That is unopened and properly sealed,
You can most certainly place that outside too,
And either consume it or use the water for regular kitchen purposes,
Such as brewing teas,
Making soups and so forth.
As for the other moon water,
It is great for washing your altar and ritual tools.
You can add it to a spray bottle or mop bucket with an essential oil of your choice for energetic cleansing of your home.
You can add it to your bath water or use it to wash your hands and face.
You can periodically anoint yourself with it too.
Also,
You can use moon water for watering plants and watch them thrive.
May the loving smile of the moon illuminate each step you take along your journey,
And may all your days be abundantly blessed.
