Merry Meet!
My name is Crow Moon,
And I'm a solitary Wiccan.
Today I'd like to share some information about Mabon,
One of the eight Wiccan Sabbats.
Mabon is the autumnal equinox,
And it is celebrated around September 20-24 in the Northern Hemisphere,
Depending on the year.
Just like the spring equinox,
It is a time for balance,
When sunlight and darkness are equal.
From this point forward,
We see the days becoming shorter and shorter as we approach Yule,
The winter solstice.
Mabon is a time when we can more easily feel the seasons beginning to change.
For Wiccans,
It is the second of three harvests,
And it is considered to be a Thanksgiving celebration.
Mabon is a time to experience and enjoy balance as the temperatures begin to grow colder and certain crops dwindle.
It is during this time when our ancestors would take note of what they harvested to ensure that their families would have adequate supplies for the coming winter.
Thus the idea of it being a Thanksgiving celebration.
Traditional foods for this season include apples,
Pumpkins,
Corn,
Beans,
And squash.
Colors associated with this Sabbat are orange,
Red,
And brown.
Many Wiccans will choose to decorate their homes with them at this time.
Other popular decorative ideas are filling a bowl with acorns and or placing acorns on your altar.
Apples are everything this time of year,
Whether they're eaten,
Turned into cider,
Or used to fill cornucopias.
Mabon is a time of rest.
We give thanks for the fruits of our labor,
While looking forward to the new year,
Which comes at Samhain.
Equal time of dark and light.
With this balance we find insight.
In spring,
The harvest seeds we did sow.
We gather our crops before the cold winds blow.
As we feast tonight on what we reap,
The earth begins to fall asleep.
And not for long,
Because in spring,
Another abundance nature shall bring.
In Wicca we recognize the cycle of birth,
Death,
And rebirth.
Each seasonal change is an example of such a constant reminder that nothing ever ends,
That everything simply transforms.
Seasons change.
So too can we also change our minds and thoughts.
So back to a period of Thanksgiving.
Mabon is a wonderful time to express gratitude in a way that is best fitting with your tradition.
And since we're all soon to be spending more time indoors,
This is a great opportunity to celebrate the home and hearth by smudging,
Cooking,
And spending time with loved ones.
Bless your home with the smell of apples and pumpkins roasting in the oven,
The sounds of laughter and merriment.
Thank you for joining me for this short celebration of Mabon.
Whatever your relationship with the divine or your path,
I hope you will find and enjoy balance during this time of year.
I will leave you with a song I wrote to celebrate the season as the crow flies.
Mary did we meet,
Mary do we part,
And Mary will we meet again.
Blessed be.
