Do you know how to work in your personal growth,

In your emotions,

In your spirituality,

And what happens when you don't work?

We are going to work on some reflections today for you to use your inner and outer resources much better.

Stay with me because very seldom we talk about the value of working in our personal growth.

Let's do it today.

Let's start.

I am very happy that you are here with me today.

We very seldom talk about personal growth,

About enriching our lives.

Actually,

We invest in our personal growth sometimes at the last moment.

Unfortunately,

I get to see some clients when they are at the edge of losing it emotionally,

Of having a panic attack,

Anxiety,

Or their trauma is so old and severe that now we need to work on deep,

Deep repair.

But there is a whole line in psychotherapy about enrichment,

About spiritual growth,

About improving your creativity.

It's kind of going to the nutritionist when you are already 200 pounds extra.

No,

You want to go to the nutritionist when you are 10 pounds extra or 5 pounds extra.

And you want to learn how to manage your life better.

This is the same for psychotherapy.

You can go for psychotherapy and say,

I want to work on my personal growth.

I want to be more creative.

I want to be able to find my purpose or refine my purpose in life.

So for working in your personal growth,

You need to have goals and desires.

But you don't need to have them clear by the time you show up in the first session.

You just need to have the desire to be better,

To improve your relationships,

For example,

To improve the way you see life or your optimism or something.

And personal growth is ongoing.

It doesn't happen.

That means you can be 80 years old and you didn't actually achieve wisdom,

Inner wisdom,

Because you didn't intentionally work on yourself.

So it doesn't happen.

We need to work for it.

What happens when you don't work for it?

You may be familiar with those feelings like you feel stuck or unhappy or unfulfilled.

If you feel stuck or unhappy for a couple of weeks or a couple of days or a couple of hours,

I will not be worried at all.

But if you feel stuck or unhappy for a couple of months now or years,

Or you really don't know where you are going with your life and what is your purpose,

That is the time for you to start listening to podcasts.

Maybe you are already here because of that.

You start listening,

You start reading,

You start finding information and of course,

Going to therapy if you need to.

So that is kind of the starting of the desire for personal growth.

When you invest in your personal growth,

You grow emotionally and mentally.

And that,

My dear friend,

Translates into you being more considerate,

More loving and more positive person.

And when you work on your personal growth,

The challenges are not going to get lost from your life.

It's not like that.

You actually may have even heavier challenges in your life and you will navigate very easily through them.

So equanimity is another word that comes to my mind now.

When you work on yourself,

You achieve equanimity.

That means something bad comes and you kind of do something through that and something good happens and you celebrate,

But you don't live reality.

So equanimity gives you this sense of inner peace.

And it means that you are going to be loving and positive and considerate all the time.

No,

Because we are human beings.

Sometimes it's just not our day to feel better.

Yes,

Sometimes we are in bad humor,

But I can recognize and say,

Wow,

I really am in bad humor today.

I better go and take a shower or go for a walk.

I better sit and cry or sit and meditate because,

Oh boy,

Something can really come out of my mouth that I will regret later.

You may use your internal resources.

For example,

Your dreams.

When is the last time that you actually dreamt about something?

And when is the last time that you went for it,

That you follow your dreams?

Most children do.

So if you say I never did,

Carmen,

Yeah,

Probably you did as a child.

And then those around you or life didn't help.

But you want to find your purpose in life.

Go back when you were 8 or 13.

Yeah,

Most children will say at age 8 what they want to be when they are growing up.

And most likely if they follow their dreams and they are most likely they are very near to it.

Probably they don't say exactly the profession that they want to be because they will discover new professions.

And new professions are discovered every single day in the world.

But they know what they want to do for the world.

Yeah,

They already have this deep desire.

Yeah.

What are your talents?

It's important that you always have an inventory of your talents,

A positive inventory of your talents.

What is your ancestral history?

What your ancestors did?

For example,

During this Christmas,

During the vacation on Christmas,

I wanted to do something new,

Something that I never done before or something that I didn't feel like I could do it.

Yeah.

And you may laugh,

But for me,

It was like,

I don't know if I can do bread baking.

Yeah.

One of my students said,

Carmen,

You don't you don't strike me as a baker because baking is so precise.

It requires so much precision.

And I always invent.

I am creative.

I don't like to follow rules.

But I didn't realize,

Actually,

It never occurred to me that I could have learned something as a child because my parents used to make bread and sell every weekend other than tamales on the weekends.

And I used to be with my mom when she was doing it or with my dad when they were doing it.

It was kind of a weekend activity.

And it was fun.

I remember it was really fun.

So we have this oven,

You know,

Like the pizza oven,

The brick oven outside.

And my dad will be cooking the bread.

My mom will be doing the bread.

And probably it was not as fun for them.

But for me as a child,

It was really fun.

And my mom will give me a little masa to do my own little tiny bread.

So it was fun for me.

But,

Oh,

Doing the bread like my mom did,

That was so delicious.

I didn't dare.

So this last Christmas,

I said I'm going to be a baker.

I am going to draw into my ancestors knowledge.

And surprisingly,

It was really good.

Oh,

My God,

I can do it.

I actually was able to do it even in the first try.

Wow,

That's so exciting.

See,

That's a talent I didn't know I have.

And if you tap into your ancestors or into the talents that they have,

Sometimes you even have it.

Because as a child,

We learn with curiosity and we enjoy more learning.

Also,

Your connection with nature.

Can you go and hike?

Can you go and do something?

Even if you don't live near to an ocean or to a forest,

You can still go for a walk and enjoy the gardens around you.

Or you can garden yourself.

So anything that gives you the connection with nature.

And you say,

Well,

Carmen,

No,

I live in a big city and everything is so busy here.

Well,

You can get a baby small plant and connect with that plant.

You can have a pet and connect with your pet.

Deeply connecting.

So any of your imagination.

If you have imagination,

You can nurture your imagination.

And your external resources.

Well,

Your family,

Friends,

Are they respectful,

Interesting,

Compassionate,

Vibrant?

If not,

You need to look for some of these kind of friends.

And part of your external resources is to let go of the ones that they don't help.

If they criticize you,

If they are harsh with you and they are very often like that,

Why you have them in your life?

They are not growing,

First of all,

And they are not helping you to grow.

So you must have a very deep,

Powerful reason to keep them in your life.

So technological resources,

You can be actually very active in selecting what media you consume.

How much of social media,

What kind of social media,

How much books you read,

What kind of books you read,

Podcasts,

How much podcasts you listen and how much courses you take.

So those are the technological resources and they are always there for us available.

A lot of them,

Good ones,

Are for free.

Yeah.

And then when you know some of the free ones,

Then you can start choosing what to pay for.

But you don't have an excuse now in the era of podcasting.

You don't have an excuse not to have something to learn.

And audiobooks.

Oh,

I remember many years ago,

Listening to audiobooks is so fascinating.

You can declutter and be mindful of what you add to your life or your home.

Sometimes it's easy to,

OK,

I like this one.

I want 10 of them,

Different colors.

But why do you need 10 of them?

Because they were on sale,

Carmen.

But it's so difficult to get rid of and it's pricey,

Not only for you,

Because it may cost you $1 or $2 or pesos or whatever currency you are listening to us on.

But if you may end up not using it and you may end up disposing it,

You already created more unwanted items in the world.

Yeah.

So be extremely mindful of what you bring into your life.

It's OK to say no when somebody say you want that or you want that.

It's OK to open your closet and get rid of the sweaters that you don't use.

Somebody will use them.

It is OK to let go of this very old phone that you are not going to use anymore.

So declutter.

Take risk.

You want to go ahead and take risk every single day.

Something baby risk.

If you want big steps in taking risk,

Expand your level of comfort.

Add adventure to your life.

And I know you've heard that before,

But learn something new.

So when you add adventure to your life,

You become interested in something.

And then you are an interesting person and then people want to be around you.

See,

Working on your personal growth,

Taking care of you emotionally,

Physically,

Spiritually,

It really pays off in terms of happiness.

You really increase your chances of being happy.

This is why it's important that you take a look on your resources and see what I can do for my personal growth today.

What I can do to improve my emotional life or my spiritual life.

Do I know how to forgive?

Do I know how to be grateful?

Can I add that to my toolbox?

My dear friend,

Thank you.

Thank you for being with me in this Use Your Resources episode.

Looking forward for more.

This is part of the series of resilience.

So look out for other episodes on resilience.

We are going to grow your inner strength.

Bye for now.
