This is a breathing exercise to be sure you breathe correctly. Breathing correctly is a necessary tool for your body to be calm and healthy. There is an “inverse way of breathing”; this is when the natural movement of the lungs, the diaphragm (parachute like muscle that aids in the breath) and the organs do not match. Breathing in tune with the natural wave like movement in your body increases the amount of oxygen in the blood, allowing the body to relax and not feeling depleted or in a state of emergency. Experience calmness as you tune into this breathing pattern. It is really easy and only requires your attention as you check in with your breath and body as many times a day as you feel called to! Welcome to this breath practice to align to your breath.

We will begin seated on the floor or on a chair.

Just be sure that you can have your back straight,

Your body relaxed and your chest open.

Let's start by rubbing the palms of the hands together,

Creating heat between our hands,

Bringing one hand to the lower belly and the other on top of your belly button.

You can close your eyes if you feel like it or just bring your gaze down to the tip of your nose and start observing how the breath moves your body and your hands.

So inhaling,

The belly will expand forward and as you exhale,

The belly will relax back.

Stay here,

Just observing and feeling this wave-like movement of your breath in your belly.

So stay connected with your breath and this outward movement of your belly as you inhale and the relaxing of everything backing as you exhale,

As I'll let you know why this is the correct way of breathing.

So when you inhale,

The belly moves out because the lungs get filled with air.

The diaphragm,

Which is this parachute muscle we have just below our ribs,

Moves down and the organs need to expand forward.

When we exhale,

The lungs are emptying of air.

The diaphragm comes up to help the lungs empty all the air out so the organs can relax back to their original position.

This is why there is a correct way of breathing and an inverse way of breathing.

The correct way of breathing,

The expansion of your belly with the inhale and the gentle contraction back down is the natural way the body moves with the breath.

Have you ever seen a newborn baby breathing?

It's the same gentle movement that's happening on their belly.

So just observe how your body feels as you're taking these slow,

Deep breaths in and out your nose,

Allowing your body to expand with every inhale and gently relax back to the center with every exhale.

Gently release the hands from your belly.

You can put them on your thighs or on your knees.

Stay focused on the movement and the sensations of the breath in your belly.

And if your eyes were closed,

Start to slowly open them up.

Still connected with the breath and the movement.

Try to keep this awareness as you stand up and continue with your day.

Always being able to come back to this practice of retraining your body to breathe as you inhale,

Expanding your belly forward,

And exhaling,

Allowing everything to gently come back to the center.

Thank you for practicing with me today.
