The Three Stages Of Stillness
by Chad Foreman
We move toward a profound simplicity in this meditation. The three stillnesses are stillness of body, speech and mind. It is a profoundly simple method that uses stillness as a meditation method. The Buddha used the term "door" for body, speech and mind as they are the only three means that sentient beings function and interact with the world. Through these three doors, we accumulate either positive or negative karma via bodily actions, speech and thoughts. When the stillness of these three doors is experienced it is a gateway to a sublime type of presence that transcends karma. The key to this meditation is the non-doing and the noticing. You are not doing things like moving, talking or following thoughts and it is important you notice these non-actions as a union of an absence and a tangible clear presence. They are not just nothing; by noticing the three stillnesses you bring stillness to life and directly experience a new dimension of your being.
