This is a short practice for working with unwanted anger towards another person. You can use it either in the moment of anger or as an aid to resolving ongoing conflict in a situation. You are invited to bring an attitude of honest and open mindful self-enquiry to this visualisation, in which you will examine the situation from another perspective and search for the intentions and resources which can help you to understand and resolve the situation. The inspiration for this meditation comes from perceptual positions work in Neuro-Linguistic Programming. This meditation is from the album "Reiki Precepts Meditations", available now, accompanies the book "Living the Reiki Precepts", and is a visualisation open to all, whether you are familiar with Reiki or not. The background music is 10-Minute Meditative State by Chris Collins.

Think of a situation where it feels like another person angers you.

What are they doing or saying that winds you up so much?

Imagine yourself and the other person now here in front of you.

What is happening?

Note your own and the other person's body language,

Words,

Facial expressions.

I wonder if you can imagine yourself stepping into the image now and into the space which the other person occupies.

Take on their body language,

Facial expressions or to their words.

What do they need?

Do you think that it is their intention to provoke an anger response in you?

See yourself through their eyes.

What happens to them as you anger?

Now step out of that other person and out of the picture again.

Is there another strategy which you could employ instead of anger?

Picture yourself responding with a different response.

Watch the you in the picture.

Watch the body language.

Watch what happens.

Is it better?

Now step back into the picture,

Into the you who is responding with something other than anger.

How does it feel?

What are the resources that you have drawn on?

Is there anything else you need?

Step back out of the picture and give yourself any other resources that the you in the picture might need.

Now imagine a time,

Sometime in the future,

Maybe the next time that you find yourself in such a situation.

Can you see yourself doing things differently?

Listening intelligently and responding resourcefully and without anger.

It's good,

Isn't it?

This was incredibly helpful, as I've been triggered and reactive towards my children a lot lately. Thank you for this tool.

Thank you, I felt their pain, sometimes confusion. It feels like they're trying to invoke a reaction out of me, maybe sometimes they are, but not usually, not intentionally. I don't like what I saw of myself, but I do appreciate what I saw, because now I know. 🌼
