This meditation involves the chanting of the Tara mantra: Oṃ Tāre Tuttāre Ture Svāhā. First I offer an introduction to Tara and explain the meaning of the mantra, then I chant the mantra, and you can join in as you get the hang of it. There is a bell at the end, but you can continue chanting on your own if you wish.

So today I'm going to be talking about and then we're going to chant the mantra of Tara.

Tara is a mythic figure.

She's regarded as being a Buddha or a Bodhisattva,

That is one who's very close to Buddhahood,

One who is sworn to come back into the world lifetime after lifetime in order to save sentient beings from suffering,

And she's in the form of a beautiful young woman,

A goddess.

Her name means star and also Saviouress,

And the connection between these things is the sailors would use stars to navigate,

And Tara the Saviouress,

The star,

Helps beings to move from suffering to freedom from suffering.

Her mantra is Om Tare Tutare Ture Svaha.

Om does not have a literal meaning,

It signifies the qualities of the enlightened mind to which we aspire,

Qualities of wisdom and compassion.

Tare is Tara's name,

Tara,

But in Sanskrit the end changes so that it's Tare when we're calling upon her name.

O Tara,

O Saviouress.

Tutare is a compound word and it means I entreat you,

O Tara,

I entreat you,

O Saviouress,

And Ture means O swift one,

And then the mantra ends with Svaha,

Which means hail or even may your blessings rest upon me.

So in chanting Om Tare Tutare Ture Svaha,

We're saying something quite specific,

We're calling upon the nature of the enlightened mind which is inexpressible,

And we're asking Tara to help us realise that.

O Saviouress,

I entreat you,

O Saviouress,

O swift one,

May your blessings be upon me.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going to chant the mantra for a while and you can join in.

You can chant out loud,

You can chant the mantra in your mind,

Just do whatever is most appropriate for your circumstances and what you want.

At a certain point I'll start letting the mantra fade away,

It'll fade away into silence,

And then after a little while there'll be a bell,

Just to let you know that the recording has ended.

And before I start chanting the mantra,

I just hope you'll come back and join me for other practice sessions,

Whether involving mantras or not.

I’ve just recently restored and painted a beautiful Tara statue for someone, and after handing her (regretfully) back to her owner , this meditation and mantra appeared. Thank you !
