Connect to your safe place through this guided visualisation practice. Imagery is known to be an effective technique used to manage distress. It is used as a distress tolerance skill, as part of "IMPROVE" in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, with the aim being to replace unpleasant stimuli with a more pleasant one. Please use this practice to develop an image of your safe space in times where you are not experiencing distress, to make it more easily accessible in uncomfortable moments.

My name is Bianca and I will be guiding you through this safe place visualization practice.

Before we get started,

To just give you a little bit more context around this practice.

So we'll be engaging all of our senses to really develop an image of our safe place,

Whatever that means for you.

Now,

This can be a particularly helpful self-soothing tool that you can access in those times where you're feeling a little bit triggered,

Maybe heightened,

Stressed,

Or in those moments where we're feeling discomfort.

It is helpful to develop this image of your safe place in more comfortable moments so that it is easier to access in those times of distress.

Now,

If you feel ready,

Please follow along with me.

Please find yourself in a comfortable position in a space where you know you won't be distracted.

You have the option to either lay down,

But preferably sitting up and alert.

Just taking these first few moments to really get settled in,

Feeling comfortable,

Getting out any final movements,

Any last wiggles before finally settling into stillness.

From this place,

We'll take a few cleansing deep breaths in together.

Inhaling through the nose,

Filling yourself up all the way,

And sighing it out through the mouth.

Two more like that,

Inhaling through the nose and letting it go.

Final one in your time,

Making it the biggest breath you've taken today.

And on the exhale,

Giving yourself permission to relax even further.

Still maintaining alertness and following along to my voice.

But with each exhale,

Releasing tension,

Melting into the body.

An invitation now to imagine yourself being surrounded by this beautiful white light.

This white light is surrounding you.

It is comforting you,

Almost like a bubble or a shield,

A veil that is protecting your whole body,

Your whole aura.

Take these next few moments to really visualise what this protective bubble looks like for you.

Perhaps it's shimmering,

Perhaps it's glowing.

Know that this white light is of your energy.

Notice that you feel safe and comforted within it.

Know that you are protected always by this.

Notice that you feel a quality of weightlessness while you're surrounded by this white light.

This quality of weightlessness is so much so that it's almost like it can pick you up just like a feather.

Imagine yourself now being picked up by this bubble ever so gently.

It picks you up out of the space that you're in and floats you into the sky.

Looking down,

Everything looks so small.

Travelling now through the sky,

Through the clouds,

Allowing yourself to be transported.

Now eventually you start to make your descent.

Your protective bubble is slowly ever so gently,

So delicately bringing you back down.

And as you make your descent,

As you make your way down,

You notice that this place feels familiar.

You've been transported into your safe place.

Notice how your feet so gently touch the earth.

Imagine yourself standing up.

Look around you.

Where are you?

Imagine now all of the details of your safe place.

What does it look like?

What are the colours?

What are the textures?

Maybe you're not alone.

Who are the people around you?

Perhaps they are souls that are still with us or perhaps they are ones that have already passed.

What are they doing?

What expressions are on their face?

What are you doing?

Notice the clothes that you're wearing.

Connecting now to perhaps your sense of smell.

Is there a comforting smell in this space?

How would you describe that?

And what are the sounds?

If there are people,

What are they saying?

Is there laughter?

Perhaps it's nature.

Is it the sound of water?

Or the breeze amongst the trees?

Perhaps birds are chirping in the distance.

Let this visualisation be rich,

Vivid,

Colourful.

Allow yourself to really soak up all of its detail.

Let it be as creative,

As expansive as you want it to be.

As it needs to be.

And finally,

What does being in this space feel like?

An invitation to really connect with the feeling of your experience here.

Is it happiness?

Comfort?

Warmth?

Belonging?

Connection?

Safety?

Identify now where you feel this in your body.

How do you experience this feeling?

Do you have identified this feeling,

The invitation to hold it in your heart space?

Take a deep breath into that space.

Final few moments to experience.

Let's take a deep breath into the space.

Let's take a deep breath into the space.

Let's take a deep breath into the space.

Let's take a deep breath into the space.

Let's take a deep breath into the space.

Let's take a deep breath into the space.

Let's take a deep breath into the space.

Depart this safe place just for now,

Knowing in your heart that you can access this place whenever you want,

For however long you want.

Visualise yourself now being wrapped up in that white light once more.

Noticing the visual of your safe place slowly fading away.

Feeling once more connected to a sense of weightlessness.

As you're being plucked up again and very gently transported back into the space that you're currently in.

You are so welcome to continue resting here for as long as you need.

However,

If you feel ready to finish up your practice with me now.

Slowly waking yourself up and reorienting yourself back into your space.

Thank you so very much for practicing with me today.

I hope this practice has been helpful.

Namaste.

Thank you.
