Settle.
Pause.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Welcome to a hit of hope,
And this one is a wee bit salty.
Imagine a bird with two wings.
Shouldn't be that hard,
It's what we see every day.
But imagine this bird has one wing that is humongous,
While the other is itty bitty.
Not only would that bird look odd,
But it wouldn't be able to fly.
In fact,
It would probably only flop and flail.
Inhale.
Exhale.
In yoga,
There are two terms that are compared to the two wings of a bird,
Abhyasa and vairagya.
Abhyasa means practice,
Diligence,
Effort.
Vairagya means surrender,
Release,
Letting go.
The idea is that we need both wings,
Both practice and surrender,
Effort and release,
To live a balanced life.
Inhale.
Exhale.
You might ask yourself,
How are your wings?
Are you someone who likes to make things happen or someone who likes to let things happen?
Where might you need more practice,
More effort in your life?
Where can you please,
For the love of God,
Surrender?
Are those energies in balance in your life or is one far stronger than the other,
Sometimes leading you to flop and flail?
Inhale.
Exhale.
Meditation can offer us the opportunity to practice and surrender,
But this ain't always easy.
It requires the discipline of choosing to meditate,
Even when you don't really wanna.
But it also asks you to trust yourself,
To know when is it best to surrender and let shit go.
Inhale.
Exhale.
It's important that we realize all the meditation in the world will never make things perfect,
But they might make them better because we can find that beautiful balance between practice and surrender.
So imagine sitting in a forest next to a beautiful creek.
Imagine that creek is your teacher showing you this.
This is what it is like to move and flow.
To move and flow and surrender.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Sit.
Breathe.
Imagine that creek flowing,
Glowing with radiance.
Imagine you are awash in the burbling of that creek and in the songs of the birds.
Birds with two strong and balanced wings that help them fly and soar and live light.
