Change is like a river, it flows on and on. This beautifully describes change and the I Ching, an ancient Chinese philosophy that celebrates the nature and stages of change. In this practice, we step into the river of change and observe the attachments, fears and obstacles that keep us bound up to the past. If you are going through a big change in your life or you find yourself resisting change, this meditation will guide you to understanding what holds you back and then letting it go.

Welcome to this meditation focused on flowing with change.

If you are going through a big change in your life at this time,

Or you are working with deepening your relationship with change,

Join me for a few moments for this meditation.

As we start,

Let's first settle into our meditation space.

For your physical body,

Settle in and snuggle into the place that you are sitting on,

Perhaps you are lying down,

Perhaps in a chair,

Or wherever you may find yourself.

Get into that comfy position and snuggle into your space.

As you are getting comfortable,

Let's now focus on your breath.

Take deep breaths down into your tummy,

Breathing in through your nose,

And out through your mouth.

Feel your shoulders drop,

Your body relax.

Let's do another one in through your nose,

And out through your mouth.

You feel even more relaxed,

Your body getting quieter and still,

Almost as if you have sunken into your chair,

Your bed or floor.

And again in through the nose,

Out through your mouth.

Your body has become beautifully still and quiet.

Now we quieten the heart,

The emotions.

Let's take another deep breath in through the nose,

And out through your mouth.

You can just leave the day behind you for a few minutes,

All your worries,

Anything that's making you anxious,

It's gone from you now for a few minutes.

And then your mind,

Let's breathe beautiful stillness and emptiness into your mind.

A lovely in-breath in through the nose,

Out through the mouth.

When you prepare for meditation,

It's so important to still all the bodies,

Still the noise,

Still the movement.

Just spend a little time settling in.

In this space of contentment and rest,

Focus on the feeling of being held by the floor,

The bed or the chair,

Being safe.

Let us now as we prepare for our meditation,

Do our last little step.

We visualise the colour silver,

The colour of protection,

Wrapping around us.

Perhaps you see this as armour or a bubble of silver light,

Or a blanket of shimmering silver.

Draw around you this protective space that only the best can come to you,

That your thoughts and experience is clear and unhindered by any negativity,

Your own or anybody else's.

Now we are ready,

We are relaxed,

We are present,

We are protected.

Let's begin.

Your minds are high,

Imagine you are opening your eyes and you are sitting at a beautiful river bank.

You can see the river flowing in front of you,

You can hear the trickle of water,

Perhaps there is gentle sunlight upon your skin,

Or perhaps it's cool and shady,

This space is entirely yours to make as you wish.

Take in your river,

Take in the feeling of the flow coming down the river,

Eventually somewhere leading out into the open ocean.

Your river is a beautiful symbol of flow,

Of being at peace with flow and with change,

And by developing a beautiful detached relationship with change that comes to us and through us.

And sometimes we face resistance,

We face things in our life that creates attachment to things always being the way they were,

To things staying the same.

Our task as we build a beautiful relationship with change,

The only thing we can rely on.

We need to somehow change our relationship to holding on to the past,

To holding on to the things that need to change.

So now as you look at your river,

You notice there's some kind of obstruction,

Something that is blocking the river's flow.

And you understand this is a part of you,

This is a part of your life right now,

And perhaps you're holding on to something.

Is it fear,

Is it a lack of trust?

Visualise what this blockage looks like.

Spend a few moments just being present with what this obstacle is for you.

What is the thing that is blocking your flow?

What is preventing you from being the change and being present fully with it?

And so as you look at this resistance,

This obstruction or obstacle to change,

See that it's impersonal,

The change itself is trying to help you grow,

To get to a new place,

To deepen your life experience,

It's not trying to hurt you.

What hurts us is when we resist the change,

When we perpetuate obstacles that block that flow,

That beautiful life force flowing from the source through to the sea.

As you focus upon it,

Start to see the obstacle disassembling,

Starting to come undone,

Starting to release its hold on you,

Its hold on the river.

And with a last deep breath,

An obstacle finally moves,

The flow returns,

The life force returns,

And you are once again in the flow of change.

And in a way you can't help wanting to be in that river.

So you're weighed in,

It's not threatening to you,

It's beautiful crystal shimmering life water,

And you let the current take you,

Gently it carries you,

In the flow held as the water moves its way down to the sea.

To be present with this water is it guides you to where you need to be next in your life,

And liberates you from the past,

The old way,

And what no longer serves you.

And with a last deep breath,

An obstacle finally moves,

The life force returns,

The flow returns,

And you are once again in the flow of change.

It's time now to come back into the present time,

You are now liberated of that obstacle,

You are free,

Free to be who you need to be next,

Who you need to be now.

Take a lovely deep breath of your own,

Feel yourself coming back into your body,

Back into present time,

Aware of the air moving in and out of your lungs,

Wiggle your fingers and toes,

Reconnecting with your body in the present time.

Well done on your journey with change,

Of liberation and going with the flow.

Change only comes to help us to go to somewhere new,

Somewhere better and brighter for our life.

Thank you.

My new favorite! Embracing change: my obstacle remained, but I simply flowed around and past it. Floating on my back head first down the river without fears of hitting my head. In a good space.
