Since the beginning of time,
Water has played an integral part in sustaining all life on Earth.
From the ancient humans,
Building their vast empires on the banks of its rivers,
To giving rise to some of the most breathtaking and amazing natural wonders of this world,
To providing a lifeline and shelter to endless amounts of marine and land species,
Water has the power to create life in abundance as well as destroy life in the blink of an eye.
Water permeates and shapes everything it touches,
Whether it's carving mountains in sand,
Growing forests,
Or destroying whole cities.
Water makes up over 70% of the human body.
It's in our blood,
It's in our cells.
All creatures,
Whether from the human,
Plant,
Or animal kingdom,
Revere water,
Praise water,
And rely on water more than any other natural element.
Nothing is as simultaneously ordinary or miraculous as water.
From drinking it,
To cooking with it,
To cleaning with it,
To fishing in it,
And to swimming in it for countless hours of recreation,
Water will always play such an important role in our lives.
Yet we nearly always tend to overlook the special relationship that we have with it.
Did you know that there are 100 times more water molecules in our body than the sum of all other molecules put together?
Now water is one of the most known substances,
But it's one of the most mysterious and least understood.
Although it is one in essence,
It is three in aspect.
And what I mean by this is it's the only common substance to exist as a solid,
A liquid,
And a gas in nature.
And think about this.
Water is the only element that can coexist in its different forms at the same time.
The solid form of water can float along the liquid form.
And water has the uncanny ability to hold a high amount of heat.
So even as the liquid water is boiling,
The steam is able to rise to the top and escape.
It's so fascinating.
Its functions are many,
Whether it's dilution,
Lubrication,
Stabilization,
Or even communication.
It is said that water is the medium which connects and sustains all life.
Now what is water?
Well,
Most of us know that water consists of an oxygen atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms to form the molecule H2O.
And that the positively charged hydrogen of each water molecule attracts the negatively charged oxygen of another,
Giving rise to a hydrogen bond between the molecules.
And although water is by far one of the most studied chemical compounds,
There's still a great deal that we don't know about water.
And a prime example is how we as humans know more about deep space than the depths of the sea.
So why all of this talk about water?
Well,
For one,
I love water.
More than any other element,
I've had an affinity for water for as long as I can remember.
When it comes to me being in nature,
I'm always seeking to find ways to be around water.
When it comes to destinations I love traveling to,
I'm always picking destinations that are surrounded by water.
And from an astrological standpoint,
I'm dominated by water.
Also,
Like I mentioned earlier,
Water plays a central and important role in the development and sustenance of all life that has and always will call Earth home.
But it's for this last reason that I wanted to have this conversation with you today.
And that reasons from a much more metaphysical perspective.
You see,
Water has long been associated as a symbolic language of intuition,
Emotion,
Dreams,
The arts,
Healing,
And inspiration.
It has been long,
Long associated with spiritual wisdom.
And water brings us this vast amount of spiritual wisdom from its rivers,
Creeks,
Lakes,
And seas,
From beneath the ground to within our blood.
And many of the great spiritual teachers,
Philosophers,
Sages,
And mystics of antiquity have all spoke with great reverence of the profound knowledge and wisdom of water.
And if we also follow the lessons that this master teacher freely provides us with,
It can serve as a powerful and steady guide on our journey of self-mastery.
I'd like to read a passage to you.
And it was written by an 11th century Chinese scholar.
It says,
Of all the elements,
The sage should take water as his preceptor.
Water is yielding,
But all conquering.
Water extinguishes fire or finding itself defeated,
Escapes esteem and reforms.
Water washes away soft earth or when confronted by rocks seeks a way around.
It saturates the atmosphere so that the winds die.
Water gives way to obstacles with deceptive humility,
For no power can prevent it from following its destined course to the sea.
Water conquers by yielding.
It never attacks,
But always wins the last battle.
And within that passage,
There is enough beautiful wisdom to guide us for a lifetime.
And right away,
It mentions yielding to be all conquering.
How many times in our lives do we struggle and strain and strive to control every aspect of what we're doing?
But the power of water,
It doesn't come from its willful assertion.
It comes from the power of its natural presence.
Our true power doesn't come from our ego,
Our need to control.
It comes from our ability to connect with that higher presence within us and the power,
The subtle but real power that runs through us.
Also within that passage,
It shows us again the importance of humility.
It also speaks to the lesson of how allowance is stronger than resistance.
For it said,
It never attacks,
But always wins the last battle.
When we encounter resistance and we push against it,
It only makes those things stronger.
Whether it's perceived problems or people we view as enemies,
We can bring about conflict when there was only confluence.
And most of us know that saying,
What you resist persists.
And water teaches us the lesson of instead of resisting and fighting back,
Sometimes it's better to allow certain circumstances and situations to unfold and play themselves out naturally.
Instead of spending valuable amounts of energy and time pushing against a perceived problem or negative,
By being in a state of allowance,
That energy is freed up so we can use it toward finding a much more healthier and creative solution.
And sometimes when we're in a state of allowance and allow those perceived problems to work themselves out naturally,
We end up seeing they were not problems after all.
Now I'd like to read another passage to you,
And it also comes from the Far East.
And it is from the Tao Te Ching,
Which is in the form of 81 poems.
It was written by the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu over 2,
600 years ago.
And it says,
The highest good is like water,
For water benefits the 10,
000 things without striving.
It settles in places that people avoid,
And so it is like the Tao.
In dwelling,
It stays grounded.
In preparing your heart,
Go deep.
In associating with others,
Value gentleness.
In speaking,
Exhibit good faith.
In governance,
It does not control.
In action,
It aligns to timing.
This is another passage that's filled with a tremendous amount of profound wisdom about water.
And another lesson we can learn from water is about adaptability.
You see,
Water is always open to change.
And when I said earlier that it is one in essence,
But three in aspect,
This is exactly what I mean.
Depending upon the temperature,
It can be a liquid,
A solid,
Or a gas.
And water's ability to remain flexible,
To adapt and to change,
Is what has made it so unique and essential throughout the ages to all forms of life.
And that lesson of flexibility and adaptability is so valuable to our self-mastery journey.
Because on this journey,
When we are seeking to develop our inner self,
When we are seeking to connect with our higher self and live more from that oneness,
We are going to undergo great transformations.
We're going to experience so many different changes within ourselves as we discover more about that which we truly are.
And some parts of us which we have been holding onto and some associations we've been holding onto will no longer serve a purpose in our life.
And if we have fear of these changes,
If we are holding on so tight that we are not embracing these changes,
This path can be a difficult one for us.
But if we take the lessons of adaptability and flexibility that water has for us and we apply them in our own mastery journey,
The transformations that we make,
The new ways of thinking,
The new ways of being that we come into,
That transition can be much smoother,
Much more in alignment,
Much more in flow.
But also,
On a level of humanity,
That lesson of adaptability and flexibility is so relevant for the time that we are in right now due to this coronavirus that has reshaped the world as we know it.
And for some of us,
We'll hold tight to the old ways of the world,
To the old ways that we operated in the world before the coronavirus.
And when this situation passes,
We'll run back to those old ways and seek to live in those old ways,
While others of us,
Like water,
Will adapt,
Will change,
And will remain open to the possibilities of a new future and a new way of life.
Now another powerful,
Powerful lesson that water teaches us is the importance of stillness.
And in our last conversation on humility,
I made a reference to having water and mud mixed together.
And when you're stirring it up,
You can't really see the difference between the two.
You can't see down to the bottom of the bowl or whatever is holding the mud and water.
But only when you stop stirring that bowl and it becomes still,
Does a natural separation occur with the mud falling to the bottom and the water rising to the top.
And then the surface becomes a mirror and the depths of that bowl become visible.
And as we apply that to our own selves,
We can also deepen our insight,
But only as we grow still and silent.
And only when we seek to have that boundless stillness can we begin to separate the essential from the non-essential,
Begin to gain clarity around what is truly our instinct and intuition,
Which is usually drowned out by the endless amounts of unnecessary thoughts and noise that fills up our daily lives.
Now,
Although it is very,
Very important to practice stillness,
Water also teaches us the lesson of not becoming stagnant.
And I would like to read you something that drives that point home.
It says,
Stillness is important,
But don't hide.
Cut off from the flow,
Stagnant pools fester and rot,
Drowning in their own imbalance.
Healthy,
Clear water stays engaged in the flow of life and scrubs itself clean by breaking open to oxygenation and transformation.
Like a healthy river,
Find ways to balance periods of languid stillness with vigorous activity.
Letting each of the phases of your life inform and nourish the others.
What a beautiful passage that is.
And I felt it was so important to read that because many times when people learn about stillness,
About being instead of doing,
They get caught between the unknowingness of what is stillness as opposed to stagnation.
There's so many lessons that water can teach us.
And even though I touched on a few today,
I know that there's so many more that I left out.
What are some lessons that water has taught you?
Well,
As you can see,
I really love water.
Whether it's a beautiful ocean or a rushing waterfall,
A lake that flows for thousands of miles,
Snow-filled mountains to frozen lakes and ponds,
Whether a cold glass of water to beat the heat,
Enjoying the steam of a hot shower to wash away the day's stresses,
Or sitting at its edges to contemplate and reflect on life.
Even if you don't love water as much as I do,
I'm sure we can all agree that water impacts and influences our lives in a myriad of ways.
And it is one of the most humble and knowledgeable teachers that we could ever ask for.
I hope that in our conversation today,
You gain some insights that can help move you forward on your mastery journey.
Take whatever resonates with you and just leave the rest.
And as always,
Be well,
Be safe,
And be blessed.
