Breath is the conduit of life. Fear distorts breath and shortens life. The secret is to use breath to lengthen our days and years, to stretch time, to enrich moments, to remove fear and anxiety. This practice was a spontaneous response to hearing about new deaths in Italy and experiencing the fear incited by what we see on media. May we never need to pass this way again.

Let us breathe in meditation.

Let us breathe again.

The peace of the beginning.

The peace of innocence.

Before this time,

Before this stress,

Before our minds were opened.

Let us breathe life and exhale death.

Exhaling stress,

Exhaling worry,

Releasing the world's hold upon us.

Let us breathe without fear,

Without anxiety,

With knowledge that we are not alone and we are not in control.

And we don't have to be in control.

And we never were in control.

Except in the illusions of the mind.

Except in the child's grasp of his father's hand.

Let us release this week,

These days,

These times of stress,

This suffering.

And let us begin to understand that fear arises from my attempt to control.

Worry and anxiety emerges like smoke from a fire,

Like the wind from the East in the desert.

Fear emerges on the horizon like a plague,

A pestilence.

But where is it written it will strike me or those I love?

Where is it written that I must fear what I cannot control?

Let us breathe the inner knowledge of peace and faith in the goodness that surrounds all evil.

In the goodness that propels the momentary decrees from another world.

Let my breath carry away all negativity.

Let my heart release its hold on the past and on the present and on the future.

Let me hold only that which is above time,

Above space,

Above human frailty.

Let me find strength in my vulnerability.

Not vulnerable to disease,

To death,

To loss,

To pain,

But vulnerable to love regardless.

Vulnerable to care for the ones I never know nor will know.

To be concerned with the suffering of strangers.

To be strong enough to weep for the unknown and laugh at it as well.

All of this comes to us on the gift of breath.

The true breath.

The breath that translates time into words and space into tranquility.

Let us breathe as we have never breathed before.

Fearless,

Brave and courageous.

To know that we are part of something much greater than that which surrounds us.

Something much greater than this time and space.

Something much greater than all the voices of calamity.

All the shrieking and wailing of fear.

That we are drawn to the place of holy breath where creation itself conceived our existence and concentrated its essence into us.

And there is our strength and one stronger than all of us.

And there is our fearlessness which cast its mantle upon us like the cape of a king as they lower the crown of serenity upon your head.

Why should you not be serene?

Why should my heart tremble when they turn on the news?

Why should I jump when the telephone rings?

Why should I think what might never be?

Let us breathe this meditation until it sinks into our bones and pours from our eyes and spreads the halo of light,

Transcendent aura of truth about us.

That no disease,

That no decrees can come close to the living one within.

Let us breathe and give peace to those we touch.

Let us breathe and breathe again the freedom of knowing we are not alone and we are strong together as one.

Hardly ever did a sentence help me as much as "why should we fear what might never be". I'm living in constant fear and this is the first step I took that actually helped me. I'll be forever grateful for that notion.
