In this schema repatterning meditation, we elicit the schema (negative self-belief) we want to work on and, since the mind can't hold conflicting emotional information, we set about repatterning it with positive emotional experiences. This meditation emphasizes the Pro-Symptom Position of Coherence Therapy, which helps to identify the emotional reasons for holding on to unhelpful behaviors.

Sitting up straight,

Pushing the crown of the head up towards the ceiling,

Starting to settle in.

Go ahead and take a super deep breath in.

Retain the breath.

And exhale.

Extending the length of the exhale.

And one more time,

Super deep breath in.

Retain the breath below the navel.

And exhale.

And then one more time,

Super deep breath in.

Retain the breath below the navel.

Exhale.

Okay.

So now we're going to take a super deep breath in.

And one more time,

Super deep breath in.

Exhale.

Okay.

So now bring to mind some symptom or behavior or even art or mode that you're motivated to change that kind of keeps causing suffering in your life.

You might want to even write this down.

So just now envision yourself acting out the symptom.

And then give voice to the beliefs that underlie acting out the symptom.

I must do such and such symptom because such and such.

It is urgently necessary that I act out the symptom because of such and such.

And now notice this is with this quality of openness,

Curiosity and even love.

How this way that you're constructing things make perfect sense.

Of course,

Of course,

You see it this way.

I must do such and such in order to blah,

Blah,

Blah because of such and such.

Say that out loud.

Now,

Let's go along with this investigation.

See if you can find another reason why this behavior works for you,

Why it is that you keep rehearsing this behavior,

Keep redoing the behavior.

Or keep holding this posture towards life.

And you can find this very,

Very interesting.

You're investigating the mind.

Now,

This following piece might be helpful to do this by writing it down,

But it's very similar to what we just did.

But my symptom,

My behavior,

This mode,

This part has so many benefits.

They are and then just write them down and then here we're taking very much the pro symptom position.

We're kind of listening for the emotional logic.

My acting out in this way,

My behavior,

Of course,

It has lots of downsides,

But let's focus on the benefits.

How does it help me first?

And now I want you to positively appreciate how brilliant your symptom is.

Your symptom is so helpful.

It is such a good solution based on how you construct your reality.

Generate some appreciation and gratitude for the symptom.

OK,

And then also just so that we feel that we are being fair minded and balanced and seeing everything now,

Just examine all the downsides to the symptom.

So the symptom also causes suffering,

Causes problems.

Go ahead and see that clearly now.

That's right.

And then but now you're looking at the downsides from a place of interest and curiosity,

It's so interesting.

It's interesting,

Interesting to study cause and effect.

Now let's go back to the symptom and then now see yourself in the symptom.

Now,

I want you to imagine that you cannot act out the symptom.

For some reason,

It's impossible for you to behave the way that.

Or act out this behavior.

Now,

What is the even worse suffering that would arise?

Now,

I want you to pat yourself on the back.

You've come up with this brilliant symptom to help you avoid this even worse suffering.

Great.

Make perfect sense.

Your symptom is such a great solution.

Now,

Let's investigate where this.

Where the beliefs come from that made the symptom necessary.

It's not absolutely necessary that we do this,

But it's more just interesting than anything else.

OK,

So.

First off,

Imagine yourself in the symptom acting out the symptom and now ask yourself,

How do you view self,

Other and world?

That's the schema,

That's the belief.

Now say the belief out loud.

And then say the solution or the symptom out loud.

Blah,

Blah,

Blah,

Blah,

Blah,

Blah.

Others are blah,

Blah,

Blah.

So I must do blah,

Blah,

Blah.

And now.

Ask yourself,

Where did I learn this emotional belief,

This lens?

When was this lens or where was this lens installed?

When did I learn the view like this way again?

So this is where did you learn the schema?

Go ahead and float back to childhood.

Probably childhood,

It could be adolescence or adulthood and see.

A scene and it can be constructed scene where you were taught this lesson.

Probably taught it inadvertently.

To see yourself back in this scene.

Notice where you are,

Who you're with.

How old you were.

And then now notice the feelings and especially notice the beliefs and the thoughts.

Notice how you how you made sense out of this.

The way that you made sense out of this,

This really is a schema.

This is what we're working on primarily.

And now one more time to see the kind of whole cause and effect relationship.

The house like,

Oh yeah,

I learned this.

I learned this lesson and then.

This lesson is framing or this lens on life has affected everything throughout my whole life.

Ever since that time.

So imagine yourself kind of floating above your life and then seeing how this belief affected your whole life.

All the different junctures.

Take a minute with that.

And now see how even this week,

Or maybe even today.

Or maybe even in this moment.

This schema or this belief is conditioning the way that you see reality and therefore how you respond.

Notice that clearly now.

Okay.

Now,

So go back one more time to the old scene.

And then re-experience,

Especially the feelings and the beliefs that came out of the scene.

Now have the perfect nurturers come.

Removing from the scene.

And now is very,

Very important.

They respond to you just the right way,

Just the way you always wanted.

And go ahead and develop that scene.

And likely you'll want to give voice to whatever is most unfinished about this.

That's right.

Keep going.

Now really give voice to whatever is most unfinished about this.

The perfect nurtured lesson so sweetly.

We're so happy to be there with you.

Keep going.

And now they respond to you in just the right way.

They tell you the thing you just always need to hear.

They treat you just the way you always wanted.

Okay.

And now I want you to notice something.

The way that they are treating you actually directly disconfirms this old negative belief.

The one that you started with that was the basis.

The reason for your symptom.

I want you to notice that right now.

And now this is also very interesting.

The perfect nurturers know that you have disconfirming information.

They they they know that you have memories.

Proof.

From your real adult life.

That also disconfirms us fully.

And they remind you that and they go ahead and have you bring up all of that.

Bring that up now.

Bring up all the memories that you have from your real adult life.

Further go to disconfirm this old negative belief.

Then relive all of those memories in a very vivid.

Experienced way.

Really feel into this.

Make this a lived experience and feel it in the body.

Now.

Turn your mind towards one of these old one of these situations where you act out the symptom.

I just want you to notice how.

But the compulsion to act out the symptom is less now.

Here you kind of undermine the belief and so therefore the symptom is no longer necessary.

You can see that clearly.

And actually rehearse that rehearse not acting out the symptom and then it not being a problem.

Because,

Again,

You have a different belief structure.

OK.

Now make a deep impression of that.

I'll count from five to one.

When I get to one you'll be awake and present in the room,

Settled in the experience.

Five,

Four,

Three,

Two,

One.

Awakened present in the room,

Settled in the experience.
