Let's do our meditation.

Loving-kindness is the longing for the happiness of another.

We may feel to a degree a longing for the happiness of others,

But feel at some level that we ourselves are not worthy of happiness,

On account of some feeling of shame,

Regret or remorse over things we have done in the past that we wish we hadn't.

Regret and remorse are two of the unwholesome mental states to be relinquished.

They do not serve us.

Of course,

We should regret having done wrong,

But not carry that regret as a wish I hadn't done it,

Because we did.

It is what it is,

And that regret and remorse thereafter continues to wither the heart and hinder its reopening.

Much better that we reflect strongly on what it was that we have done,

The nature of the mind that prompted it,

And make a strong determination not to do it again,

And in that moment forgive ourselves utterly and unconditionally.

Sometimes we feel our actions are unforgivable.

Well,

If you feel that,

Then you should make the reflection on how Jesus freed himself from his own suffering through finding forgiveness.

All our aversion,

All our greed,

All our selfishness,

It is not innate.

It is not innate in any human being.

It is a conditioned response to confusion,

To ignorance,

To not knowing.

Few really understand the way of things.

Most of us are confused.

Ignorance is rife.

It is hardly surprising that greed and aversion should arise in our minds and in the minds of others.

When we come to see the true nature of suffering,

We also come to understand that that suffering that we witness around us and within us is inevitable for as long as we are confused about what life is and what we are doing.

The practice of loving-kindness starts with an act of forgiveness.

It starts with an act of humility that recognizes that I do not know,

That I did not know,

I do not understand,

I have not understood what I was doing.

And in that moment,

That feeling of shame can be transformed,

That feeling of regret can be let go into a feeling of love and kindness towards ourselves because we all are sometimes confused.

So if you are carrying regret and remorse or a sense of shame around things that were done in the past that you wish you had not done,

Then generate a genuine feeling of loving-kindness and compassion towards yourself.

Reflect upon your own confusion and the suffering that it causes and let go completely with an act of forgiveness.

I forgive myself completely and unconditionally for all my past wrong deeds.

I pray that no being shall suffer on my account.

And I make a strong determination from this moment forth to not deliberately bring suffering to myself or to others.

May I be happy and peaceful and free from suffering.

May I be happy and peaceful and free from suffering.

And when sending loving-kindness to yourself,

Really see yourself free of suffering.

See yourself in your own heart and with all the love that you can muster,

Send that loving-kindness towards yourself.

It is your heart's deepest longing to be free of suffering.

If you are going to wish yourself free from suffering,

Then understand what that freedom from suffering is.

Do not just make the reflection,

May I be happy and expect that that would be enough.

When we wish,

May I be happy.

We are wishing that we may realize the cause of our own suffering and free ourselves from those causes.

May I genuinely free myself of suffering and find peace.

Whatever wrong deeds I have done,

Whatever suffering I have caused,

Myself or others in the past,

I forgive myself utterly and unconditionally.

I pray no being shall suffer on my account.

While you are sending loving-kindness to yourself,

Send it also to those who you recognize have suffered on your account.

May all beings be happy and peaceful and free from suffering.

If you are carrying shame,

Feel it.

If you are carrying regret and remorse,

Feel it.

But feel it with a loving-kindness towards yourself and let it go.

May all beings be happy and peaceful and free from suffering.

All those who may have suffered on my account,

I am sorry.

Please forgive me.

Thank you.

I love you.

Sukhino ha kemino hantu sabbe satabhavantu sukhita.

Metan cha sabha lokasming.

Unconditional loving-kindness to all beings without exception.

Understand that loving-kindness does not favor one being over another.

It is the genuine longing for the happiness of all beings.

Bring your attention into your heart and feel with gentleness and generate a genuine longing for the happiness of others.

With no judgment of one being over another is better,

Same or worse,

That is just pride.

We are all confused to greater or lesser degrees and on account of it we are suffering to greater or lesser degrees.

May all beings in all directions without exception come out of suffering and find real peace.

May all beings be happy.

If you are going to send loving-kindness to yourself,

If you are going to forgive yourself,

Then you most certainly should forgive others for the wrongs that you consider they have done you.

In the same way that you are,

That all of us are capable of falling into confusion,

So too are those who have wronged us.

Your ill will and aversion to them does nothing but harm yourself and create misery for you.

Any ill will that you wish towards one who has harmed you is like throwing sand in their face except you are throwing it into the wind.

It blows only back into your own face and brings only misery to yourself for only you are the real sufferer for your ill will.

So on account of the fact that it does not serve you in any way but to cause more misery for you,

But more importantly on account of the fact that we can recognize that those who have wronged us do not understand what they are doing.

Open your heart with forgiveness.

I forgive completely and unconditionally all those who have wronged me in any way.

I have no idea in what ways I may have wronged them in the past.

I pray for their forgiveness.

May they be happy and peaceful and free from suffering.

May all beings be happy.

May all beings in all directions without exception be happy and peaceful and free from suffering.

Let that feeling of loving kindness spread from your heart through your whole body and into the space immediately around you.

Be filled with nothing but the feeling of love for all beings without exception everywhere.

May all beings be happy.

May all beings be happy.

May all beings be happy.

I’m not sure what I heard that touched my heart, but for the first time in my 70 odd years I was truly able to forgive and feel forgiveness. My shoulders relaxed a little more and I just feel lighter. Namaste πŸ™πŸ»
