And letting yourself find a comfortable position to sit,
A posture that's allowing for alertness,
But also feeling relaxed and comfortable.
Losing your eyes or just resting your gaze downward.
Letting your attention rest on the breath,
Just observing the breath and how the body naturally breathes itself.
Allowing this focus on the breath to let go of what's come before,
To help settle the body and the mind to whatever extent you're able right now as you sit to practice equanimity.
Begin to reflect on the benefits of a peaceful mind that has a sense of equanimity,
Poise and steadiness.
Let yourself feel an inner sense of centeredness,
Of ease.
And then beginning to repeat simple phrases such as this,
May I live in harmony and ease.
May I be peaceful.
May my heart be open and grounded,
Firm in the midst of all things.
And as we sit,
We recognize that all created things in life arise and pass away.
The joys and the sorrows,
Events that are pleasant or unpleasant,
People themselves arise pass away.
Structures and buildings are created and fall away.
Things like animals,
Even nations and entire civilizations that have come and gone,
Sensing the truth in nature itself.
Letting yourself rest at peace,
Now unwavered by the changing of the world.
May I learn to see the rising and passing away of all nature with equanimity and wisdom.
May I be open,
Centered,
Compassionate and steady.
And feeling this peace arising,
Recognizing as well that all beings carry their own karma.
And may I recognize that I can love and care for others,
But not at a detriment to myself,
As I know I alone am responsible for my emotions and reactions,
And they to theirs.
May I bring compassion and equanimity to the people in my life,
To my community and the world.
May I live with a heart at peace,
Knowing that the happiness and suffering of others depends on their actions and not on my wishes for them.
I can hold them with kindness and send blessings,
But their happiness and suffering depends on their actions and their deeds.
May I rest in equanimity and the great natural balance of the heart.
And so it is.
