In life, no one is receiving punishment. We choose our difficulties because we know that our path on this Earth is simply an instant in eternity and we know that the deeper we go in density, the more that we know ourselves. We are eternal beings changing and changing through eternity. In the manner in which we change, we expand our consciousness and can recognize the purpose that is implicit in everything that happens.
