In this lightly guided meditation, Amy Edelstein leads a contemplation on the backdrop of stillness. Beneath the surface layer of thought and feeling, we discover a sense of awareness and consciousness. Resting our attention softly on this dimension of experience, we discover ease of being, peace, rejuvenation, and insight.

In this meditation we'll focus on deep stillness.

The way we do that is by allowing our attention to move from the surface layer of experience,

Thought,

Feeling,

Physical sensations,

Into contemplating the nature of awareness,

The mystery,

And the qualities of human consciousness.

You can use the breath as an anchor to allow yourself to focus.

As you begin to experience focus,

You can let the close grip of attention on the breath to fall away and simply contemplate that backdrop of awareness,

The fact of being aware.

Allow your attention to be soft and supple without grasping after any particular insight.

It doesn't matter if thought is there in the background.

Simply give it no extra attention,

Just like hearing a TV in the other room where you can't make out what they're saying.

Let your thoughts just be in the background in a channel that you're not paying attention to,

And allow your attention to rest on that quality of being aware.

We'll use the bell to focus us,

And then we can begin.

Let your attention rest on the space,

Noticing at the edges of your awareness,

How there's an expansion and a porousness.

Let your attention be soft,

Open,

And observing.

Feel the stillness as a dimension of experience opens up within.

A kind of space and presence and potency that's gentle and subtle and deeply alive.

Notice the qualities of suppleness and stability,

Of strength and softness,

Of joy and stillness,

And of fullness and space.

Let your attention rest on the space,

Noticing at the edges of your awareness,

How there's an expansion and a porousness.

Let your attention be soft,

Open,

And observing.

Let your attention be soft,

Open,

And observing.

Let your attention be soft,

Open,

And observing.

Let your attention be soft,

Open,

And observing.

Let your attention be soft,

Open,

And observing.

Let your attention be soft,

Open,

And observing.

Let your attention be soft,

Open,

And observing.

As we draw the meditation to a close,

Let's dedicate our practice to our own illumination,

Wisdom,

And joy,

And to peace,

Balance,

And harmony throughout the cosmos.
