Welcome to today's mindfulness exercise of appreciating joy.

Find yourself a comfortable position in which to sit or lie down.

Make any final adjustments to get yourself as comfortable as possible.

As you allow your eyes to gently close,

Take a moment to acknowledge yourself for showing up for today's practice.

Start now by listening to the sounds that are furthest away.

See if you can really stretch your listening by listening to the sounds that are furthest away.

As you stretch your awareness in this way,

See if you can allow the sounds to help you locate yourself in the present moment.

Feel the real time nature of these sounds informing your presence in the present moment.

From here now,

See if you can contract your awareness.

The sounds furthest away do now have the sounds in your space,

Perhaps the room that you're in.

Bringing into crisper focus the sound of my voice,

The soft sounds of the music,

And any sounds occurring in the space.

As you continue to listen,

See if you can focus your attention further.

Go from listening to the sounds to listening to the sensation of the body as you bring your awareness to your personal space.

See if you can feel the sensation of the breath coming in and out of the body,

Observing the rise and the fall of the body's breathing.

Breathing in and breathing out.

Continuing this in your own time for some moments.

Breathing in and breathing out.

As you continue to breathe,

Let's begin the appreciative joy practice by bringing to mind the time in which you experience joy.

It may have been something relatively small,

A simple moment of happiness,

Or it could have been on the back of a major accomplishment.

As something or anything comes to mind,

Pay attention to how it feels to rest in this memory of joy.

You can cultivate this intention to rejoice in your own happiness by offering yourself a few phrases of appreciation.

You may find it useful to repeat after me.

May I be happy.

May my happiness continue.

May I be present for my joy.

May I appreciate the joy in my life.

You can offer these phrases silently in your head,

Connecting with the intention and appreciate the joy you experience.

May I be happy.

May my happiness continue.

May I be present for my joy.

May I appreciate the joy in my life.

As you continue to breathe in and breathe out,

You can now bring to mind a good friend,

Perhaps a loved one,

A friend,

A teacher,

A mentor,

Or maybe even a pet.

See if you can imagine or connect with your natural desire to see this person experiencing joy.

You don't need to focus on what it is that brings them joy.

Instead,

Connect with the reality that this person,

Just like you,

Wants and deserves to be happy.

In an effort to cultivate this intention of appreciative joy,

Offer this person a few phrases.

Repeating after me may be useful.

May you be happy.

May your happiness continue.

May you appreciate your joy.

I'm happy for you.

Once again,

You can offer these phrases silently in your head,

Connecting with the intention and appreciating the joy.

May you be happy.

May your happiness continue.

May you appreciate your joy.

I'm happy for you.

Breathing in,

Breathing out.

Allow this person to go from your mind and bring to mind a neutral person.

Someone you see,

Maybe regularly,

But don't know very well.

For example,

A co-worker or a neighbour.

And although you don't know this person well,

You can recognise that this person wants to be happy.

You don't need to know what their happiness looks like.

But again,

You can offer this person phrases of appreciative joy,

Connecting with the intention to care about and rejoice in their happiness.

May find it useful to repeat after me.

May you be happy.

May your happiness continue.

May you appreciate your joy.

I'm happy for you.

Once again,

Offering these phrases silently in your head and connecting with the intention to appreciate the joy you and others may experience.

May you be happy.

May your happiness continue.

May you appreciate your joy.

I'm happy for you.

Breathing in.

And breathing out.

Breathing in.

And breathing out.

There's a piece of wisdom that says what you appreciate,

Appreciates.

And so as we appreciate our joy,

We in fact increase the joy in our lives.

Looking at it from a perspective from neuroplasticity,

As we spend more time appreciating our joy,

We strengthen those neural pathways and open ourselves up to more continued happiness,

Continued appreciation and even more joy.

As you continue to breathe,

Gently bringing some movement back to your fingers and your toes.

Gently waking up the body,

Perhaps even inviting in a light stretch.

Taking a moment here to acknowledge yourself for showing up for today's practice.

And as you open your eyes,

Returning to the day,

Energized and revitalized.

And as you open your eyes,

Returning to the day,

Energized and revitalized.

And as you open your eyes,

Returning to the day,

Energized and revitalized.
