When we feel inadequate, we tend to compare ourselves to others. We can invariably find plenty of examples of people who we think are better, look better, are faring better. But do we really know? And how can we compare two different lives? How about falling back in love with your life again, instead? Let's make a conscious effort to overcome our brain's negative bias and look at what is going right.

This is a meditation to let go of comparisons with other people and feel more in tune with your life.

As you focus on the natural rhythm of your breath and the gentle movement of the body,

Breathing in,

Expanding and breathing out,

Relaxing,

Briefly consider all the areas of your life,

Your career,

Your love life,

Your relationships,

Friends,

Finances,

Physical health,

Mental health and anything else which is significant for you.

Are there any of these areas where you compare yourself with other people?

Thinking they are luckier,

Thinking they have more,

Thinking they do better,

Thinking they are better.

And if this is the case,

Have you considered that it might be an illusion?

We don't really know what's going on in other people's lives.

Sometimes the surface is very different from the depth,

And appearances can be very different from the reality.

Consider these people also have areas where they compare themselves with others.

Maybe they compare themselves with you.

Thinking other people are doing better.

Thinking you are doing better.

Thinking other people have an easier time.

Or maybe you do.

So wherever you find comparisons with others,

Wherever you find a feeling that your own situation is less than ideal and it should be better,

Just be aware of those thoughts.

Let's just observe the thoughts,

Accepting them,

Accepting the fact that they are there,

Without needing to change them.

Just gaining awareness of them is an act of self-compassion.

It's okay to have these thoughts,

It's okay to be human.

But also,

Let's consider now what you do have in your life.

Those areas where you think you are doing well,

Where you think you have real blessings.

What do you have?

What is there?

What are your blessings?

What makes you happy?

What are you grateful for?

What is your purpose?

What motivates you to get up in the morning?

What do you have around you?

Who do you have around you?

And give yourself some time to feel the warmth from these thoughts.

The appreciation for the fact that these gifts are there.

These gifts are in your life.

They don't need to be there,

But they are there.

They are there for you to enjoy,

To cherish,

To relish.

I'd like you to bask in this warmth.

Take some time to just feel it spread throughout your body and throughout your mind.

So looking back at those areas of perceived lack now,

Do you feel any different?

And if you do,

This is also something to be grateful for.

Let's switch our brain to the positive.

We naturally have a negative bias,

And we do have to make a conscious effort to look at the positive.

It doesn't naturally have as much of an impact on us,

And not for as long.

But if we know this,

We can restore the balance.

And before we finish this meditation,

Just consider.

You are a unique being.

You are a unique blend of gifts,

Emotions,

Feelings,

Ideas,

Light and shadow.

You have skills.

You have love.

You have beauty.

You have gifts to share.

You have a body.

You have a mind.

You have senses.

You have thoughts.

You have laughter.

You have tears.

You have your own light.

You have yourself.

No one else is like yourself.

Go and shine that light now.

Enjoy your day.

When I started listening I wasn’t sure this was the meditation for me, but I’m so glad I listened to the whole thing. A gentle truth to remember each day. A meditation I will probably listen to often. It completely switched my mindset in just a few minutes.
