In this meditation, connect with the present moment by exploring each of the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether—through the senses associated with each one. Start by grounding yourself with the earth element and connecting with the sense of smell. Move to the water element, focusing on taste, and notice any sensations of fluidity or movement within. With the fire element, attune to sight. Then, transition to the air element, using touch to connect with the present moment. Finally, connect to the ether element through sound, allowing yourself to listen to the silence or ambient noises around you, expanding your awareness into the present moment.

Find a comfortable position,

Either seated or lying down,

Making sure that you feel comfortable at this moment.

Feel free to close the eyes or keep a soft gaze.

Start to notice your breath,

As you're breathing in,

Know that you are breathing in,

And as you're breathing out,

Know that you are breathing out,

Allowing your breath to be soft and fluid.

Bring to your mind's eye the image of earth,

Perhaps it is dirt,

Perhaps it's a plant,

Something that reminds you of the element earth.

As you imagine this earth,

Notice what smell you smell,

If you smell anything at all.

The element of earth is related to our sense of smell,

Maybe we can smell the dirt,

The leaves,

Whatever it is we have imagined in our mind's eye,

Then perhaps you can start to smell whatever it is in the room you're in,

The scent of your clothes,

The scent of a candle,

Whatever is in the room you're in.

In your mind's eye,

Imagine fire,

An image of fire,

Maybe it is a campfire or a fire in a fireplace or even on your stove,

Allowing the image of a fire to come to your mind's eye.

And as you see the image of fire in your mind's eye,

Notice the sensations of light at your eyes,

Even with your eyes closed,

Maybe you notice the sensations of light,

The shadows,

The bright hues.

The element of fire is related to our sight,

Giving us the light we need to see.

Perhaps you notice the light,

The shadows in the room you're in.

In your mind's eye,

Imagine,

Visualize an image of air,

Maybe it is wind,

Maybe it is something else.

Imagining air.

And as you see this image in your mind's eye,

Notice what you feel touching your skin.

Air is the element related to the sense of touch.

Maybe you can feel on your skin the image in your mind's eye.

Or maybe you notice the sense of touch of the clothes you're wearing,

The surface you're on,

Whatever may be touching your skin.

Imagine in your mind's eye a vision of water,

An image of water.

Maybe the ocean,

A lake,

A river,

Creek,

A water fountain.

Bringing the image of water to your mind's eye.

Water is related to the sense of taste.

Perhaps you can sense or taste the body of water in your mind's eye.

Or perhaps you notice the taste of your own mouth.

In your mind's eye,

Imagine,

Visualize ether,

Space,

The fifth great element.

As you visualize or imagine space,

Ether,

Know that space and ether are related to sound.

Perhaps start by noticing just the sound of your own breath.

Maybe your own heartbeat.

Sounds in the room.

Sounds in your home or space.

And little by little,

Start to notice the sounds further and further away.

How far can you hear a sound?

Hearing through great space.

On your next inhale,

Coming back to your body.

Noticing how all five elements live inside of you.

Notice how they help propel our five senses.

Notice how the five senses help us anchor into the present moment.

Bringing your awareness back to your breath,

Feel free to start to wiggle your toes and fingers.

Perhaps moving your head.

Blinking the eyes open if you had them closed.

And bringing yourself back into the space.
