Awakening - The Complete Road Map - Step 5
by Yaron Etzion
Join us for a transformative series of talks exploring the journey of consciousness as it matures and blossoms into its fullest potential. Over the course of 10 sessions, we will delve into progressively advanced levels of maturity—beginning with a contracted sense of a separate self and culminating in a state of fully expanded awareness. In this session, we will discuss the fifth revelation a maturing consciousness reveals- melting into ONEness.
Transcript
Welcome again to this wonderful opportunity we give ourselves every week to stop the rush,
Hold hands and walk the path together,
Not just as individuals,
But also as a united consciousness.
I would like to congratulate you for braving through the process that we are in the midst of.
As you can see,
The higher we climb on the mountain,
The thinner the air becomes.
So we are in the middle of a journey.
I'm going to say a few words about the journey and a quick review of what we did so far,
Just to make sure we're all on the same page.
Our DNA is bravely aiming to portray the complete path our consciousness is going through as it evolves to a full state of maturity,
Full blossoming.
As we said,
It's not that this is a methodology that is universal and true for everyone.
Actually it probably is not,
But it still gives us a good description of what a consciousness goes through from a very contracted,
Self-absorbed state to a full awakening state.
And the logic behind that attempt is that once the roadmap is laid in front of us,
Our journey can become much more directed and efficient in that sense.
We can harness our energy in a way that is actually helping us to progress,
Because it's very easy to get lost,
Especially on the spiritual path.
So many teachers,
So many ways,
And so many distractions,
So we can use that roadmap to come back to the path and direct our energy and efforts and intention in the right way.
So this is about why we are on this journey,
And now quickly the steps that we've been through until this point in the journey.
So as we said,
It starts with a spark of longing igniting within us,
The longing to understand the deeper meaning of our existence,
To unveil the mystery,
To come closer to a better realization of who we are and what we are doing here.
And that spark could be ignited by many reasons,
No point in pointing them again.
If you haven't listened to that,
Or any other talk that we had on this series,
They are all available on my Insert Diamond page.
So just go there and catch up.
It's not too late.
So the spark has to be ignited,
Otherwise there is no longing.
Without longing,
There is no intentional progress.
And assuming that it is burning in each and every person currently taking part in this circle,
Otherwise we wouldn't be here.
Now we can push on forward.
And then the first step our consciousness is doing is reaching that realization that phenomena in general have no power.
And specifically our thoughts and opinions have no power.
And that's huge.
And I tell you,
Without that realization dawning in you,
It's very difficult to keep on marching on this path,
Evolutionary path.
We realized that we were held captive by our thoughts and opinions,
Operated,
Manipulated,
Like a robot.
And of course,
Robot has no freedom.
A set of predetermined conditions governed by our thoughts and opinions,
Manipulated how we interacted with life.
And that dawning of realization on it actually has no power.
And I am free to choose what I do with my thoughts and opinion.
I can choose whether I believe or not,
Obey or not.
That is dramatic first step.
So phenomena in general and thoughts specifically have no power,
Is the first step.
Second step is alignment between our physical body and the physical reality it encounters.
Finally,
We are able to meet reality instead of meeting our ideas about reality.
And there is some new type of harmony born when our body is aligned with reality.
Harmony that was not there,
Available for us.
Our body was much too tensed,
Too stressed,
And it had nothing to do with the physical reality it encountered.
Finally,
When we don't believe our thoughts anymore,
We are much more available to physically meet the present moment and align with it.
That's the second step.
The third step is developing the ability for what we called whole listening.
As we move further and further away from the realm of thoughts and opinions,
And our body is actually present to experience the present moment,
We see that the organic next step would be developing the ability for whole listening,
Which means free from preconceptions and automatic reactions,
Led by our preconceptions.
Good and bad,
Craving and aversions.
This drops,
That automatic reaction drops,
And we are becoming more and more available to experience reality,
The present moment,
Free of any judgment and preconceptions and ideas.
So the ability to truly listen expands within us.
The next step is developing self-awareness,
A true sense of self-awareness,
Meaning a new identity is born.
Until that point in the journey,
Our identity was based on the interaction,
Relationships that we held with outside events,
Objects,
Objects,
Stories that we tell ourselves about ourselves.
I am rich,
I am poor,
I am talented,
I am hopeless,
I am good,
I am bad,
I am my story,
I am a father,
I am a man or a woman.
Our identity was based on the interactions with phenomena.
But at this point on the journey,
Consciousness starts to ask itself who is having a relationship?
What is that?
Who is longing?
Who is developing the ability to align its body with the physical reality surrounding it?
Who is developing the ability for whole listening?
And then the focus switches,
Like we did today,
Switches from being hypnotized by the outside events,
Phenomena,
To the observer.
And then the consciousness reaches that realization,
No?
I am awareness.
A new identity is born.
I am the awareness itself,
Not the objects and not determined by the type of relationships I have with objects.
I am the awareness itself,
As opposed to what is happening on the stage of the cinema hall or the theater hall.
Consciousness realizes I am the theater hall.
Do you see the difference?
Now consciousness itself becomes the answer to the question of who am I?
A new identity is born.
So this is a quick summary of what we've done so far.
Any questions before we step another step forward?
Somebody write something just to know that I don't speak to myself.
A heart is flying.
Okay.
So I guess I'm not speaking to myself.
So we are ready to move forward.
As you can see,
The further down the rabbit hole we go,
The less affected we are by thoughts and opinions.
You see,
That's like the thread that follows us on our path to enlightenment.
Hmm.
Thank you,
Carly,
For summing up.
Yeah,
It's good.
It makes things a bit more clear.
So the further we go down the rabbit hole,
The less captive we are by our thoughts and opinions.
And now that generates a lot of huge leap forward,
That evolutionary milestone that we are going to describe today.
I call it the meltdown to oneness.
Melting into oneness.
And it has to start with us realizing how thoughts work.
Thoughts generates duality.
They cut reality into small pieces so it's digestible,
Conceptualizing it for us.
That is how thoughts help us to relate to the reality that we meet.
This is a picture.
This is a table.
This is a chair.
This is the wall.
This is the floor.
This is the ceiling.
This is Tommy.
This is Jerry.
Right?
It creates,
It cuts reality into smaller bundles that we can relate to and swallow.
But those concepts are artificial.
And at this point,
We realize that.
Those,
That tendency of thought to digest reality in small pieces.
At this point in our journey,
We realize it's artificial.
It's not real.
Reality is not truly compiled by separated objects.
It's not what actually is there,
Out there.
What actually is there,
Out there,
Is an expression of oneness,
Materialized as matter and energy.
Now,
When I speak about it,
Your intellect is saying,
Oh yeah,
Right.
I read about it.
I've heard it before.
Or your intellect is saying,
What the hell is he talking about?
This is a table and I'm sitting on a chair.
What is he talking about?
Because it has to be a concept at this point,
Because I am talking about it.
You are hearing about it,
And your intellect generates a concept about it,
So you can understand what the hell am I talking about.
But oneness is not a concept.
Oneness is the nature of reality.
At this evolutionary states,
Our consciousness wakes up to that nature.
The division is revealed to be an illusion,
An artificial tendency of the realm of thoughts.
It doesn't exist in reality.
Some of you may have experienced that on some graceful past experience.
You know,
You sit and meditate and somebody,
Something,
You know,
An expansion happens,
And the I dissolves into oneness.
There is no I,
A sense of no I,
Separated I.
Some of you may have experienced it not in meditation,
But during action,
Repetitive action,
You know,
Like swimming or running.
Some of you have experienced it by being completely emerged in creativity.
You know,
Like if you create something,
You build a table,
You paint a painting,
Or you are writing a song.
Whatever it is,
Inspiration comes,
No?
A sense of no I taken over.
The I that used to take ownership of the action.
And the I dissolves.
Do you know what I'm talking about?
Even if it's just momentarily,
A brief experience of no I.
Some of you maybe only read about it in books,
But never actually.
I think all of us have.
Maybe we didn't know to give it a name.
We didn't have the right terminology,
But we've been there,
No?
We can call it inspiration or trance,
You know,
Trance.
Suddenly you lose all sense of time and space,
And there is just that expansion of consciousness happening.
The separated I that used to be engaged in relationship to life,
That separated I somehow fell asleep for a moment.
And you realize the immediate intimacy that is revealed.
Intimacy that is so unique,
It generates no boundaries.
Because a concept is a boundary.
Do you see that?
When we are interacting with reality through our intellect,
Through our thoughts,
And we conceptualize it,
We create boundaries.
This is where the table ends,
And this is where the chair begins.
And so on and so forth.
Those boundaries don't exist in reality.
And you don't need to be too spiritual to appreciate that fact.
You know,
Today you can be a scientist.
If you're looking for proof that what I'm talking about is an accurate description of physical reality,
You are welcome to study what modern science has to say about oneness,
One matter,
One energy,
One consciousness even.
What science has to say,
But I think this is probably the most fantastic realm of research you can make today.
You know,
That thin line that separates spirituality and science.
But you will see that from the first law of thermodynamics that was written hundreds of years ago,
When science was just in its infantry.
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be lost.
It only transforms into various shapes and forms.
But the same energy plays in this universe.
There is a limited quantity.
No,
The difference between the table and the gap between the table and the chair,
And the chair,
The difference is not that they are different separated objects,
Just how dense the atoms are in the different forms in space.
Do you see what I'm saying?
If you dive into the very atom level of the object,
You will find that,
You know,
The distance between one atom to the other is relevant to the size of the atom.
It's like the difference between this galaxy and the galaxy next to it.
It's mostly vacant of matter at all.
There is just space,
Some of it more dense than others,
But that's the only difference,
How dense the atoms are.
And this is a soup of atoms that we are swimming in.
And most importantly,
That we are a part of,
We are a part of that soup of atoms that that allows reality to manifest.
Currently,
Our addition to the soup is this body that in itself changes all the time.
And the unique flavor we add to that soup is the ability to add meaning to our experience.
That's our unique flavor.
But we are not separated from the soup.
How can we be?
So we can use science.
If spirituality does not echo loud enough for you,
You can't ignore that fact.
Oneness is not just a beautiful,
Spiritual,
Theological,
Philosophical idea.
Oneness is the nature of our reality.
Our body is a part of that molecular,
Atomical soup.
Our consciousness is a part of the universal consciousness.
It's not separated.
It never was.
You know?
And the more sensitive you become,
Especially on the path that we are portraying on this series of talks,
The more sensitive you are,
This becomes more and more clear,
Obvious.
That sense of a separated self living by itself,
For itself,
Using its own limited resources reveals itself to be an illusion.
My private consciousness is just an aspect of a much greater consciousness.
And I'm influencing and being influenced as part of that consciousness.
Think about it.
There's that new age idea about you creating your reality.
You know,
You just think about one million dollars and eventually you'll materialize it.
But what that idea forgot is that you don't live alone.
And it's not just your egoistic thoughts and opinions that generates reality.
Reality is the outcome of consciousness,
Universal,
That you are a part of.
So,
Yes,
You are influencing reality,
But you're not alone.
Seven,
Eight billion more men and women and child are creating that reality as we speak.
Add to that everything that lives and grows.
Everything.
Universal consciousness.
You are a part of that.
And again,
You can relate to that from a spiritual realm,
Or you can just learn about it.
What science has to say about it.
Carl Jung called it the universal memory,
The collective memory.
You come to a holy place.
You feel that energy of silence,
Of grace,
Holiness.
You feel that energy vibrates from the stones.
No,
You know what I'm talking about?
How can you feel that?
It exists.
And you're a part of that.
You come to a room and you sense something is wrong.
Like,
What did I miss?
Did somebody just had a fight?
Even though everybody's just sitting and working with their computers or whatever.
You sense something is,
There is a disturbance in the force,
No?
You sense it.
How do you know?
How can you sense it?
Because you're a part of that.
Or,
You know,
Like there is endless,
Endless,
How do you say it in English?
Events,
No?
That people came to a very similar,
If not the exact same,
Scientific development.
In both sides of the pond.
Like the telegraph and the telephone and the bulb,
The electric bulb.
So many that came to materialize almost at exactly the same time.
Like days apart.
People that don't know each other suddenly came with an idea.
And the guy who was the first to write a patent is now famous,
But he was not the only one thinking about it.
You probably can give even more examples than I know of.
How is that possible?
Because consciousness reached that level of maturity that allowed that realization to spring.
That innovative idea to materialize.
Through personal consciousness of individuals who dedicated themselves for it.
How is that?
Consciousness evolves and we are evolving together with it.
But we are not separated from it.
Just expression of that.
Universal consciousness.
At this state,
Our journey wakes up to realize,
Oh,
With no boundaries,
With no definitions,
With no concepts,
I find out that I do not end.
If nothing is binding me anymore,
Determining that I'm up to here and from here there is something else,
That I expand to include everything.
Do you see that?
In Hebrew,
A definition and a fence comes from the same root.
It's almost the same word.
Definition and fence.
When there is no definition to what I'm experiencing,
That I is available to expand,
To include that experience.
Do you see what I'm saying?
Does it make sense or am I just blabbering here?
Questions.
Please ask.
So the fence falls down,
Barbara is asking.
Yes,
The fence falls down.
I'm not subjected to believe my ideas about this and that anymore.
The further we go down the rabbit hole,
The less hold my thoughts and opinions,
Preconceptions,
They have less and less power over me.
And I become more and more available to experience life without definitions,
Without fences.
And when the space I'm maneuvering in has no fences,
I'm free.
Do you see that?
I'm free to be this and that and that and that.
I'm free to experience whatever life has to offer,
Pleasurable or painful.
I'm free to reinvent myself,
To be in harmony with reality as it materializes in every given moment.
I'm as flexible as an octopus and colorful as an octopus.
Do you know how octopuses can hide in the coral just by adopting the color and the shape of the coral,
The texture of the coral?
They completely camouflage themselves.
So I become like an octopus.
I become a part of the coral reef,
If I choose to.
And I'm not talking about the loss of the sense of my individuality.
It's not that.
It's not madness or insanity.
For functional reasons,
Of course,
I can relate to myself as Yaron and communicate with people from that standpoint.
But I'm not limited by that identity anymore,
To believe one thing and reject another.
Karl is asking,
Do the boundaries,
As artificial as they are,
Have any purpose?
Functional.
Functional purpose.
But you use them as,
You know,
Traffic lights,
Just so you can harmoniously take part in the ongoing traffic and avoid collisions.
But you don't identify with the traffic light,
No,
You just use them.
So for functionalism,
Yes,
I can sit on a table,
I can read a book,
I can take this glass of water and use it to drink my water.
But there is no separateness anymore.
Karl is asking,
What's the difference between madness and chaos?
Well,
They are not on the same realm.
Chaos is the feminine aspect of creation.
Entropy.
It's another law in thermodynamics,
Entropy.
It's basically saying that if you leave the system untouched,
Unmanipulated,
It will go back to its original stage of total chaos.
Madness is the illusion that you are separated from that.
That's madness.
Insanity.
All of our drama begins when we start separating reality into small bites and generate a duality between the observer and what it is observing.
Because you can only be observing as an observer small bites of reality,
And reality doesn't exist in small bites.
Think about it,
All the drama,
All the hassle,
All the history of conflict and war,
It's because man relates to small aspects of reality and creates an identity around that specific realm of life,
Completely rejecting everything else just to protect its identity.
Who am I?
I am an Israeli.
I need to fight the Palestinians.
That's it.
War is born.
You see that?
When will war end?
When will conflict end?
When you wake up to realize you are not separated and you will be wide enough,
You will reveal yourself to be wide enough to embrace all aspects,
All parts of reality as oneness that you are a part of.
You know the book that we've finished writing and Carly was so gracefully helping me to finalize is called When the Wave Remembers the Ocean.
It will soon be available,
When the Wave Remembers the Ocean.
Try to imagine what happens to the psyche of a wave,
What happens to the psychology of the wave when it suddenly remembers the ocean who it completely ignored until that point.
Do you see what I'm saying?
What happens to the wave,
To the existential experience of its own self when it realizes that it has always been an oceanic expression,
A temporary oceanic expression?
Do you see what I'm saying?
I'm waiting for your questions.
If you ask a question now,
You will gain instant enlightenment.
But only the first person to ask a question.
How,
What?
Obviously,
Barbara is eager for enlightenment.
So,
A whole Niranjana,
Consciousness is expanding at this stage to include everything as the possible answer to the question,
Who am I?
There is nothing left out.
I am everything.
And everything is me.
I can recognize myself everywhere,
Anytime.
You know,
Like Jesus said,
Split a piece of wood and you will find me there,
Right?
Pick up a stone and I'll be there.
He was intoxicated with that realization.
I am everything.
I am that.
I am that.
No?
Pandora is asking,
When people treat us poorly or ignore our boundaries,
What should we do?
The right thing.
You do exactly the right thing.
And how would you know what the right thing to do is?
You will find out when you don't react out of misery,
Out of suffering,
But out of compassion and love.
And love will show you the right way,
The right action.
We'll talk about it more in the next session,
Actually.
But if you need an answer to this question now,
I'll tell you.
Love will guide you.
Make sure that your reaction is guided by love.
Otherwise,
You just spread more disharmony around,
You know?
You are disharmonious,
You spread disharmony through your action.
This is called karma.
Make sure you don't generate more karma.
Tony is asking,
How do we cultivate this meltdown to oneness?
You don't.
It's like the sea asking,
How can I be more wet?
The sea doesn't have to be more wet.
It's wet.
Oneness is not something you need to cultivate.
You are that.
Wake up.
Just wake up.
Wake up from that sense of separation.
Me,
Me,
What about me?
What will happen to me?
My wants,
My need.
This is not something to be understood.
It's not a new concept that your intellect will finally get the point.
Ah,
Okay,
Got it.
I got it.
Good for me.
I have another medal on my shelf that I can show people that come to visit.
It's nothing to do with your intellect and understanding creating a new concept,
No.
You just be that.
Wake up to realize that.
Oh,
Aha,
Niranjana,
Yes,
I am that.
It's like the wave asking,
How can I be more aware of the ocean?
Look down.
You are the ocean.
You are the ocean.
You are that.
And if you need to practice,
Then practice.
Meditation,
You know,
Practice.
Okay,
I'm going to give you homework that may help you come closer to that realization.
Find opportunities during this week,
Coming week,
Where you observe the reality that is manifesting around you without labeling it,
Without trying to conceptualize it.
Go to nature,
You know,
Go to the sea,
Whatever,
Sit on a bench in a park,
Observe.
No reactions,
No rejections,
No cravings or aversions.
No,
Wow,
I'm having a beautiful experience.
No,
Wow,
What a beautiful moon.
I don't give it even a name.
It's not a moon.
I don't know what it is.
It doesn't matter.
Just be there.
And when you will meet that tendency of the realm of thoughts to tag it with a brand name and to give it a sign,
Plus or minus,
Good or bad,
I want it,
I don't want it,
I don't want it.
Just don't believe it.
Don't give it any attention.
Don't fight against it,
But don't hold on to it.
Just,
Okay,
Now my mind is trying to tag that as a moon.
I don't care.
It could be called an elephant for as much as I care,
Whatever.
Just there,
You know,
Be there.
Present,
Free from the realm of thoughts and opinions and concepts.
And you might find yourself to be the moon.
Who knows?
You might realize that you've been the moon for all your life.
Yes?
No,
This is not a tallit.
This is just a scarf.
Peggy said,
I have to stop feeling anger and sadness.
There is difference between anger and sadness.
Okay?
Anger is your choice.
Sadness is inevitable.
Do you see that?
I invite you to go back to my Insight Timer page and listen to that talk about suffering and how to reduce suffering.
This is anger.
Anger is suffering.
Sadness is inevitable.
Sometimes we're sad.
Sometimes we're happy.
Sadness is not bad.
Don't try to reject sadness just because it's less comfortable than happiness.
So,
Yeah,
Do your homework.
See how it feels when you are becoming more and more available to experience reality without that sense of duality,
Without your opinions and thoughts and concepts about it.
10 minutes,
20 minutes every day.
See what happens.
Yes?
Barbara is saying,
Thank you for holding our hands.
The air is thin.
Yeah,
That's why the more we progress,
The group becomes thinner and thinner as well.
But I would like to congratulate you for your courage to keep on marching together,
Holding hands,
Supporting each other.
It's so beautiful to see.
So I would like to thank you for coming and taking part of this beautiful experience together.
And I look forward to meeting you again next week,
Same time.
So you go there,
Bye-bye,
Love you.
