Welcome to the first day of the mycelial growth course.
I'm Maru,
A certified walking coach and Reiki master who draws inspiration from nature's most resilient networks.
Over the next seven days,
We'll explore how mycelium,
The root structures of fungi and nature's original communication system,
Can inspire our personal growth and connection.
Our journey will follow the life cycle of fungi,
Starting today with the foundations,
Connecting to the network.
As we progress,
The guided instructions will gradually give way to longer periods of silence.
Since you and your mycelial network will need less external input as you establish yourself.
Let's begin our first day together.
Now find a comfortable position and feel the physical support beneath you.
This is your first connection to the vast network from your body into the surrounding ecosystem.
Before we begin our practice today,
Let's briefly understand what inspires it.
Mycelium networks are root-like structures of fungi.
Remarkable living structures living beneath the forest floor.
These invisible networks form what scientists call the wood-wide web.
Find thread-like structures connecting different plant species in a cooperative relationship that has existed from long before we humans walked the earth.
Unlike our human tendency to force solutions,
These networks always find exactly what they need.
If roots encounters a rock or dense soil,
They don't force their way through.
They simply find another path.
And even in the face of adversity,
When faced with toxins,
They break them down,
Transforming poison into nourishment.
Now close your eyes if that feels comfortable to you or maintain a soft gaze downwards.
Imagine these fine thread-like extensions reaching from your body into the ground below.
Like the mycelium growing,
These connections you are establishing are remarkably adaptive.
Feel them naturally growing towards what you need at this moment,
Whether that's stability,
Energy,
Or calm.
Trust that these roots will bring you precisely the nutrients you need right now.
If they encounter an obstacle,
They simply redirect,
Finding another pathway without struggle,
Without force.
As we enter our first period of silence,
Simply stay with the sensation of these connections forming and extending.
Notice what arises without trying to change it.
Now bring the awareness to your hands.
Like the sensitive tips of fungal hyphae that can detect and respond to their environment.
Your hands are instruments for perceiving your surroundings.
Try to notice any subtle sensations,
Temperature tingling,
Heaviness or lightness.
You can place them wherever you want,
On your lap,
Palms down,
Palms up,
Whatever feels more comfortable to you.
During this silence,
Allow yourself to simply receive information through your sense of touch.
Nothing to do,
Nowhere to go,
Just receive.
Now bring your attention to your breathing.
And notice the natural exchange happening within each breath.
Oxygen in,
Carbon dioxide out.
This simple transaction connects you to the plants and your broader environment.
Much like the carbon exchange facilitated by these underground networks.
Just as fungi transform fallen leaves into rich soil,
Your breath transforms one element into the need for another,
Participating in nature's cycles.
Now as we move into silence,
Stay with this awareness of exchange.
Notice how effortless it is when we allow natural systems to function as they're designed to.
Just as mycelial networks extend with purpose,
Seeking nutrients and creating connections,
Set an intention for your growth during this course.
What would you like to cultivate or strengthen?
Hold this attention lightly,
Not as a forced goal,
But as a natural direction for growth.
In this next silence,
Allow your intention to settle in,
Like a spore finding the perfect conditions to begin growing.
For our final practice of today,
Bring your awareness to your entire body as one connected system.
Notice areas that feel energized,
Areas that feel relaxed,
And areas that might be holding tension.
Like a mycelial network that's aware of all parts of the entire forest,
Develop this broader awareness of your whole self.
As we enter our final silence for today,
Allow this awareness to expand naturally.
Without forcing or directing it.
Now gradually bring your attention back to the room.
Feel the support beneath you once again.
When you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
The connections you explore today represent the beginning of your personal mycelial network.
Like those efficient systems beneath the forest floor,
You have the capability to find alternative routes when faced with obstacles.
Connecting to exactly what you need in each moment.
Before tomorrow,
Try to simply notice natural networks in your daily life.
Whether you see the branching patterns of trees or the web of relationships in your community,
Or the interconnected systems within your own body.
Tomorrow we'll explore day two,
Sensing.
Information exchange,
Where we'll deepen our practice and develop greater awareness of subtle energy and information flow.
Remember,
Like mycelium finding its way through the soil,
Your practice doesn't need to be perfect.
It just needs to keep growing.
One connection at a time.
