When it comes to understanding the five senses,
We need to look back in history at what some of the great Himalayan masters have taught us.
What they taught us was that the five senses were originally seen in a positive and a negative light.
The positive light of the five senses were primarily used for survival.
For any of those of you who have been out in the bush where there are some dangerous forms of animals,
You will notice that your five senses are easily heightened,
And it is very obvious to see that they were used for survival methods and means.
The problem with the five senses is that early on,
These great masters found out that the five senses lie to us in just about everything.
Now we really do more than ever know how the five senses do lie to us about the true nature of reality.
For example,
When we look up at the sky,
We would normally think that it is the sun that rotates around the earth.
Of course,
This is incorrect.
This is the same with tides.
It appears as though a tide comes in and goes out,
When now we know that the tides are simply related to gravity of the moon and the sun and the way it makes the water bulge.
It is the same thing with stars.
We would think that we see stars in real time,
But we do not.
It is also the same thing with gravity.
When we look at gravity,
We think that it is just something falling to the ground,
Pulling something to the center of the earth,
When now we know that gravity,
Of course,
Warps space and time.
To deal with these five senses,
The great masters found out that if they wanted to look at the physical world,
They needed to use the five senses.
If they wanted to look at deeper dimensions,
Such as what we've done nowadays with quantum physics,
What you needed to do was look inwards and use a different form of sense,
For no choice of a better word,
To figure out the true nature of reality.
In modern day science now,
We have also been able to look and find out many things of the true nature of reality.
For example,
We have three particles,
Protons,
Neutrons,
And electrons,
Of which everything we know is made,
Everything you see in the seen world,
All the diversity,
You and me,
And everything around us,
All just made from the same three particles with slightly different rearrangements repeated over and over and over again.
There are so many aspects of life that is getting revealed to us now,
As we're able to look at different dimensions of reality,
That is far beyond what the five senses can tell us.
We now know,
For example,
The four most common chemically active elements in the universe,
Hydrogen,
Oxygen,
Carbon,
And nitrogen,
Are the four most common elements of life on earth.
We are not simply in the universe,
The universe is also in us.
The ancient masters also used their own science to look inwards and to look at different dimensions to try to find the true reality of nature.
Their science,
In India for example,
Was called yoga,
And it was through the techniques of yoga that they trained their mind and their body to access higher dimensions.
If one were to look back at herbal medicine and the way that they figured out what herbs did what to the body,
There is no doubt that there are some amazing elements related to this.
It is quite amazing that somebody could take a substance from nature,
Sit there,
And feel what it did to the body in such intricate levels that they could turn that herb into a medicine.
What all the ancient masters were looking for at the end was what I will call an awakening.
This awakening word has been used in various forms in different cultures around the world,
Some call it enlightenment,
Some call it reaching moksha,
But there are of course awakenings that happen on different levels.
These awakenings therefore can happen with a child.
For example,
Let's say that you've been studying quantum physics for many years.
One day you just suddenly understand the concept of how time and space is warped by gravity,
Not in a way that you can describe it with words,
But a way that is beyond words,
A truly deeper understanding.
Somebody would have experienced this at some form in their life,
Whether it was playing music or playing a sports game or whether it was with meditation or whatever it may be,
Where you just knew something beyond what any book or anybody had written about or spoken about,
Something that you could only talk about with a person who actually experienced that awakening.
It was these various forms of awakening through the science of yoga that one accessed higher dimensions of understanding the true nature of reality.
It is very ironic in the end that the great spiritual masters of the world who brought us yoga and various other arts such as Ayurvedic and herbal medicine,
That it was these masters that accessed this awakening through their techniques which gave them a new dimension and a deeper understanding to reality.
I hope this lecture has proven some use to you and I've been able to convey the message where one can understand it.
