Hello and welcome.
Today I want to share a simple yet powerful method I use to help shift out of reactivity and create new neural pathways over time.
I call it the NEC method.
It stands for notice,
Ease,
Choose,
And keep doing it.
This idea was born out of the frustration I felt when I'd catch myself mid-pattern and realize I had no clear way to shift it.
I knew I needed to choose differently but in the moment it was hard to remember how.
So I created this method to help me pause and gently reroute my mind.
Almost like hitting a pause button so I could make a better choice.
Let's break it down.
N is for notice.
This step is all about awareness.
Just recognizing that you're falling into an old pattern and that alone is huge.
It might be a subtle moment that you notice that negative chatter looping in your brain.
Maybe mental loops with thoughts like I'm not good enough or why would anyone listen to me?
Or you catch yourself snapping at someone you care about and realize halfway through it's undeserved.
These moments can show up in your body as physical tension in your chest,
Shallow breathing,
Or just a vague uncomfortable feeling.
This is your cue to think ah I'm doing it again.
And that recognition is the first big win.
So that's notice.
Next we have E.
E is for ease.
This is where you ease into the awareness you just had without judgment.
This is where self-compassion steps in.
You might say to yourself of course I reacted this way.
My brain has walked this path a hundred times.
You can remind yourself that there are very valid reasons for this reaction.
Maybe it protected you once.
Maybe it felt like survival.
The reason really doesn't matter.
But you're here now and that pattern no longer serves you.
Try gently saying something like it makes sense that I feel this way.
Or this is old wiring.
Not who I truly am.
I want to change this.
And then this leads us to the most important step.
C.
C is for choose.
This is the key step.
This is where you choose a more supportive aligned response.
Something that interrupts the old cycle.
And what you choose will depend on what you need in that moment.
If your mind is racing you might try a breathwork technique like box breathing.
If your body feels restless maybe you physically move.
Stretch.
Take a walk.
Just something as simple as changing rooms as soon as you catch it interrupts that brain loop.
Some other great options include journaling what you're feeling.
Doing a visualization where you see yourself handling things differently.
Listening to music that shifts your energy.
Calling or texting someone you trust.
Stepping outside for fresh air.
Splashing cold water on your face to reset your nervous system.
The list is endless.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's redirection.
You're gently guiding yourself off the old path and on to a new one.
I highly recommend something as simple as a short mantra as soon as you catch yourself.
I love the simplicity of the word nope.
It just instantly sends the message to my brain.
So lastly we have K.
K is for keep doing it.
Repetition is everything.
Every time you choose the new path you weaken the old bridge and strengthen the new one.
It may not feel like much in the moment but those small choices add up.
With consistency that new response becomes second nature.
One that feels calmer,
Wiser,
And more aligned with the version of you that you're becoming.
It's like walking a new trail through the woods.
The more often you walk it the clearer the path becomes.
Eventually it's the only one you'll want to take.
So there you have it.
Neck.
Notice,
Ease,
Choose,
And keep doing it.
With practice you'll begin to create powerful new neural pathways that support a more grounded,
Empowered version of yourself.
Thank you for spending this time with me.
I hope this helps you on your journey.
Feel free to leave a comment and let me know if you try the method and how it worked for you.
Take care and remember to treat yourself as kindly as you would a friend.
