Welcome to this 5 minute guided introduction to meditation. Often our minds are busy, with thoughts jumping from memories in the past to plans for the future. Part of our humanity is creating a narrative about our identity and our experience in this world. Our brains automatically do this, so much so, that the neural pathway responsible is called the Default Mode Network. Welcome to this guided introduction to meditation.

Often our minds are busy with thoughts jumping from memories in the past to plans for the future.

Part of our humanity is creating a narrative about our identity and our experience in this world.

Our brains automatically do this,

So much so that the neural pathway responsible is called the default mode network.

And as natural and as useful as it can be,

This tendency can distract us from the present moment.

Meditation allows us to practice mindfulness,

Being intentionally aware of the present moment.

As we begin,

Find a comfortable position,

Either seated or lying down.

Allow your spine to be long and feel connected with the seat or the surface supporting you.

Bring awareness to your body in this space,

In this moment.

Allow your eyes to close or your gaze to soften.

And now turn your attention to your breath,

Not needing to change anything.

Just notice the natural rhythm of your inhales and your exhales.

And try to keep your attention on the breath.

Allow your mind to start to quiet.

Visualize a clear blue sky.

As thoughts start to come in,

Allow them to drift across the horizon as clouds in that sky.

Notice them and then return your attention to your breath.

Let the thoughts surface and then fade without jumping into the story.

And if you find yourself caught up in a memory or a plan,

Release it.

Return your attention to your breath and don't judge or criticize yourself.

We'll have some silence from my voice for the next few minutes while we practice.

Now release the attention from the breath.

Bring your awareness back into your body,

Back into the room.

Shift a bit and flutter your eyes open.

Maybe bring a hand to your heart to seal your practice.

Thank you for taking this time for yourself.

Be well and I'll see you again soon.
