Not Your Mother's Tarot
Old-school tarot told you what to do and how to interpret the cards. There was a right way and a wrong way. But a new generation is emerging that uses the cards to lead you back to your own intuition, to the meaning the cards have for you, right now, in this moment, based on what you need to grow trust in yourself, the process and the Universe. This talk walks you through a groundbreaking kind of tarot that anyone can learn to deepen self trust. It puts you in the place of your own expert. The age of gurus is dead. It's time to use tarot to lead you back to what you already know.

So you're here because you like tarot and maybe you're trying to learn how to do it and maybe you've been to some tarot readers and you're wanting to know more.
So let's talk about old school versus new school tarot.
Old school tarot had a bunch of people who looked like fortune tellers with sort of dangly earrings and you know sort of crystal balls,
Lots of sage crystals,
Maybe there's a bit smelly and dusty in there and you went there so that they could tell you when you were going to meet the tall dark stranger and if you were going to move to California or not.
And that is not how tarot works today.
There is an entire generation of tarot readers,
Of which I am just one,
Who are recognizing that tarot is here for an entirely different purpose.
And it is here to help you get in touch with your own intuition so that you never need to go for another tarot reading.
And that doesn't mean you'll never go for another tarot reading but ultimately my job here is to put myself as a tarot reader out of business.
And here's how.
So you know everybody needs some sort of way to start tarot and if you want to start learning tarot by going to traditional sources that's great.
You know you can learn it in all kinds of different ways.
There are so many ways out there to learn it now.
But recognize that whatever you get at that beginning is just a starting point.
It's just a place to begin.
And that actually what you're doing is you're beginning a discussion with tarot.
Because tarot is here to talk to you in a language that you understand so that you can gain the most insight from it possible.
And that means it will talk to you in a different way than it will talk to me or that person or that person or that person.
Which means that the meanings that come through on the cards are going to be something that will meet you where you're at and will push you slightly further than that to keep you always on your growing edge.
To keep you always on your toes so that you will learn what you need to learn.
And sometimes it will be that comforting voice that will just say I love you.
You are safe.
You don't need to be afraid.
And we all need tarot to tell us that sometimes.
And sometimes it will be that voice that says here's a difficult truth that you are now ready to hear that you weren't ready to hear before.
And it will tell you something that will feel uncomfortable and like a stretch.
And it can do that because tarot never has one particular meaning.
Now that doesn't mean that there aren't sort of patterns throughout the cards and there are definitely still some of the cards that I read in a way that you might recognize.
However,
Over the years that I have been reading tarot my understanding of a lot of the cards has changed and some of those cards the meaning that I now understand today is unrecognizable from where I began.
And that is because I have developed and what I am ready to hear,
The spiritual truths that I am ready to hear has shifted.
So I'll just give you a brief insight into what that looks like when I'm reading the cards.
For other people that means that depending on who's in front of me I have to listen very intently to what is coming through for that particular person given their level of knowledge of the cards and their level of spiritual development and what they're ready to hear and how the universe thinks they're ready to grow.
And so I don't always hear the same interpretation of the card.
I also will often not even give an interpretation for myself.
I will ask them to look at the card to feel into the feelings that they feel.
I'll take them on a somatic journey into their bodies.
I might give them a meditation in that moment.
I might ask them to bring their guides in so that their guides can tell them what that card is trying to tell them.
I might do some something that looks like psychotherapy with them.
I might do all kinds of stuff.
I'm just going to,
Side note,
Not a therapist.
I'm not doing therapy with people.
But what is happening in those situations is that ultimately I am putting aside my interpretation of the cards in favor of whatever wants to come through.
And sometimes what wants to come through might have more to do with what I know and I might be actively told to not say what I think I know and to allow something completely different to emerge that I never would have guessed that that card meant because that's what that card means for that person in the moment.
So how does this apply to you?
It means that if you think these cards have one particular meaning you need to throw that idea out the window.
It means that if you think that you need a tarot reader or even a particular tarot teacher,
You need to throw that idea out the window.
Tarot teachers and tarot readers are not completely redundant but they are always here to give you a space to learn what you need to learn and to take what you like and to leave the rest.
So if something resonates for you,
If something really you know something that a reader or a teacher says really deeply resonates with your truth,
Keep it.
And if it feels like you have resistance to it then maybe take a look at that because that might be your ego resisting it and it might be that you're hearing a truth that you don't really want to look at yet.
But if it really means nothing to you and you get nothing then whatever that person whatever that reader or that teacher just said you can completely disregard because it's not for you.
And that's the same if you're just randomly clicking on videos on Insight Timer or YouTube or whatever platform.
You can you can always rely on your inner guide to tell you that's for you and that's not for you.
And so what does that this mean to build your own tarot practice?
It means that really you need to start a conversation with the cards and of course with any conversation the more frequently you do it the more you can get out of it.
So you know if you have time for a daily pull that's great.
If you don't go for a weekly pull.
If you don't even have that you can at least start with a monthly pull.
And the format can vary you don't always need to ask the same questions.
Again you can allow the question to emerge for you and listen.
Listen to what the universe is saying.
If you hear a very clear pull three cards then pull three cards.
If you hear it's important that this card is reversed then listen to it.
If you get nothing then maybe it doesn't matter that you pulled the card reversed.
If you hear pull another card for clarification do it.
Now if you're not hearing those clear instructions and it's cool if you're not,
Not everybody does,
Then just do something and trust that whatever you're doing is either exactly the right thing or you're going to be guided to do something else next time.
Just trust.
Trust the process.
You know I used to be a birth doula and the truth is that the first time somebody gives birth they never know what they're doing.
And so they have to just trust that either they're going to know what to do or it's just going to happen.
And either way there's a baby.
So with tarot if you don't know what you're doing and if you're hearing no guidance just do something random.
Pull a card.
Pull three cards.
I would probably shy away from pulling ten if you've never done it before but if you feel to pull ten then pull ten and see what happens.
Now the nice thing about having a regular practice is that there's a decent chance you're going to start pulling the same cards and you're going to start to see some sort of pattern emerging.
And this isn't always the case but I have found for most people it is.
That if you have a daily,
Weekly,
Monthly practice you'll start to go oh hello you again.
Oh hello you again.
And it might be a card that you welcome and it might be a card that you're like oh god not you again.
But either way it is there because you are needing to hear a particular message.
And I think they say in marketing that you need to hear something ten times before you're going to click on it.
You know an advert or commercial or whatever.
And it seems to be the same in tarot.
So you know you might hear tarot might give you a card once and you might sort of hear it.
But by the tenth time chances are you're listening and it has your attention.
And also as you keep pulling it what you can do is start to notice what happens in your life when you pull that card.
And that is brilliant information and that is often how we start to really deepen our understanding of a card.
Because it's great to google it or look in the guidebook of the tarot deck you have and I encourage you to do both of those things.
You know if you google it and there are 10 choices click on one.
Trust it.
You know again if you don't like the sound of it throw it out.
Try again.
But as you start to pull things more and more what you can then do is notice oh when I pull that card often this thing is happening in my life.
Great that's information.
Does that tell me something new about that card?
Does that tell me something that I'm not seeing or that I don't really want to hear or that I wasn't ready to hear a week ago,
A month ago,
Because the aim here is not that you get the goodies.
I hate to tell you but you know the old school tarot that was here to tell you how to get that tall,
Hot,
Dark,
Handsome stranger or how to get the right car or the next house or the perfect job.
Those things are going to happen or they're not.
But tarot is not here.
It's not Santa Claus.
Tarot is here to help you gain an understanding of how to make decisions that you can trust.
Because you know and I know that you don't trust yourself a lot of the time.
And it's why you're here in the first place.
That is why anyone I've ever met has come to me for a reading because they don't trust their own wisdom and they're looking for an outside perspective.
And that is great but ultimately if we're always having to rely on an outside perspective we are going to be in trouble.
Partly because you can't have a tarot reading 57 times a day which is how many times a day you need to make decisions if not more.
And also because my intuition is not me.
You developing trust in my intuition is not going to help you at the end of the day.
You developing trust in your intuition is what you're here for.
So notice as you pull the cards what are you seeing?
What patterns are developing?
It might be what the card told you in the guidebook or on Google and it might be something completely different.
And if it is I want you to trust that and not what somebody else told you.
Because that is the message of that card for you at this time given your level of development and given where the universe wants you to get to next.
Because you are here to grow and you are here to find freedom.
Freedom to trust your own intuition.
Freedom to trust your own decision making process.
Freedom to trust yourself,
Other people and whatever you want to call God.
Whether it's or higher power or Mickey Mouse.
Doesn't matter.
Don't care.
There are no rules here.
But you are here to learn how to trust yourself using the cards.
So this daily,
Weekly,
Monthly practice,
Whatever it is,
You start to notice the patterns that develop.
It's really helpful if you write things down in a journal because then you can go back and look at what you pulled before and what it meant to you before and you can see if that still resonates with you and if there's maybe something else that wants to come through.
And have a discussion with them because they are here to help you.
And if you need to check in with a tarot reader or a tarot teacher that is great.
There's nothing wrong with that.
But remember you are ultimately your own guru and you are here to put all tarot readers out of business.
So if the tarot deck that you're working with really works for you,
Keep using it.
If you feel you're starting to outgrow it,
Ask the universe to send you a new one.
Don't jump too frequently between decks because again you're trying to have a conversation and if you're jumping from deck to deck to deck every day it's like you're trying to use a different language every day.
You can do that but it's going to get more complicated.
And what's beautiful about developing a relationship with a particular deck is that the images are going to start to deepen for you.
The particular way that the cards are set out is going to deepen for you.
So trust that and again if you feel like you're outgrowing a deck just ask the universe to send you a new one and it will at some point.
But I worked with the same deck at the beginning of my practice for years before it was clear to me that I needed a couple of extra ones to work with.
And today I will sort of switch between them depending on who I'm reading for and what the flavour is that day.
But we're here to develop a conversation,
To develop trust in ourselves and in our ability to hear.
So if you need to use the other recording here which is called something along the lines of how to read tarot and how to learn tarot in 13 minutes and it will give you a practice that you can use to get you started with this and to get you on on track with this.
And if you want to use a completely different process again I encourage you to trust your own intuition and to do what you need to do based on what you're hearing.
So have a beautiful time with this,
Trust the process and know that whatever you get is here to lead you to your own wisdom because you already know.
I love you,
Keep coming back.
