Welcome to the ancient, powerful yogic practice of the silent intonation of the OM mantra. This mantra is said to be all one ever needs to be liberated. Sri Rama Tirtha said, "Chant OM, OM. If you do that for a few moments, your whole being from head to foot becomes light." Make OM your teacher and discover the gifts of this omnipresent and holy vibration. This is a an introduction along with a short practice suitable to beginners.

Welcome to this Om meditation.

My name is Beth and I'll be guiding you.

Om is the most sacred of holy words,

A calling forth of the eternal self.

It is a mantra,

A liberating word,

Phrase,

Or thought repeated.

Thus,

As the Brahma Sutras say,

We can become liberated through the supreme mantra Om.

As Vivekananda has said,

Om is not a word,

But God Himself.

According to Yogananda,

Om is the Holy Spirit and the Great Comforter.

We will chant the Om inwardly,

Not out loud.

It is thought to be more effective this way.

It is important to chant in a specific way with the breath.

Your intonation of Om should begin at the points when your inhalation and exhalation start and end when each ends.

In other words,

Each internalized Om should be continuous and unified with the rise and fall of the breath.

I'll externalize the sound for you just to give you an idea of the flow and then I'll ask you to join me silently.

Breathing in,

I think,

Om,

Exhaling,

I think,

Om.

Your inhalation and exhalation may be shorter or longer.

Om,

Om,

Om.

The important thing is that a single Om lasts for the duration of an inhalation and another single Om lasts for the duration of the exhalation at the pace of your comfortable breath.

Please sit comfortably with your back straight.

Close your eyes and focus your attention upward.

As you breathe in,

Mentally tone Om,

Giving equal weight to the O and the M sounds throughout the inhalation.

On the exhale,

Begin a new Om,

Again giving equal weight to the two sounds for the entire exhalation.

Remember this is an internalized sound.

Just do your best.

Be relaxed and at ease.

No forcing,

No fatigue.

Take a break whenever you need to with a deep breath.

Om,

Om,

Om.

Continue at your own pace.

The Monika Upanishad proclaims that Om is the bow,

The arrow,

And the target of cosmic consciousness.

So aim true and rest there,

Enjoying the waves from the core of the cosmos as they wash over you.

Om,

Om,

Om.

Om is the ultimate guru,

The infallible teacher and guide from within.

Be filled with Om.

Bathe in Om.

Radiate joy,

Peace,

And power with your very presence.

Past,

Present,

Future,

Everything is Om.

Om,

Om,

Om.

Om is the end of fear beyond duality,

Beyond life and death.

Through Om you find darkness flees because you are the light.

Om,

Om,

Om.

Now release your practice and sit in silence for a moment.

A quote from Yadana Vakya.

You cannot see the seer of the sight,

You cannot hear the hearer of the sound,

You cannot think of the thinker of the thought,

You cannot know the knower of the known.

Your own self lives in the hearts of all,

Nothing else matters.

When you're ready,

Gently open your eyes.

You may still feel or hear the reverberation of the eternal Om.

Thank you for joining me today for this Om meditation.
