So go ahead,

Take a moment,

Close your eyes.

I want you to,

As you close your eyes to meditate here,

I want you to just pull your shoulders down a little bit away from your ears.

The closer your shoulders are to your ears,

The more likely it is you're holding a whole bunch of energy and stress in your body.

Right,

So just consciously pull them away,

Pull them down,

Straighten your back up.

Maybe align the back of your head with your spine.

Just kind of pull it,

Back your head back a little bit.

Might even kind of take your lower half of your body and like tuck it in a little.

Just kind of straighten your spine.

And then I want you to take a nice big deep breath into your stomach,

Second place we hold a lot of tension,

All these nerve endings where they come together.

Breathe in deeply.

And exhale.

And then again,

Breathe in deeply.

And exhale.

Just loosen up some of those nerve endings.

I know it's probably a lot of people that pull on your energy and need your time.

I want you to give this time to yourself.

Every time you have a thought,

I have to go,

I need to think about something or do something else.

I want you to just use that as an opportunity to remember,

Oh,

This time is for myself.

Meditation,

When we do it,

It's a time that's just for us.

So put down all your responsibilities for a moment.

Don't worry,

They'll be there.

They'll be there when you open your eyes.

I want you to also just loosen any tension in your jaw.

A lot of us hold a lot of tension in the jaw.

We probably over talk,

Including me.

Or if we don't say what we mean to say,

Some of that tension gets stuck in the jaw.

So loosen up your jaw.

And also your hands,

You might even open.

Maybe you put one hand on top of the other.

Sometimes we'll do that in Zen and touch the thumbs or put them on your legs just with your palms open.

But whatever is comfortable for you.

I kind of sit a little bit like this usually.

Something that feels good to you.

And just notice the palms of your hands.

There's a lot of energy that can come out of them.

Sometimes healing energy,

Creative energy.

You might build things with your hands.

Or if you're just angry,

Maybe you make a fist and you punch a bag.

One way or the other,

Usually energy is just a little bit of energy.

But one way or the other,

Usually energy is coming out of our mouth,

Out of our jaw,

Coming out of our hands.

So ease any tension in these two places.

And you can breathe all the way in to your hands.

Breathe all the way into your hands.

And out.

And as trippy as this sounds,

Any tension in your jaw,

Any words that have been unsaid or you regret saying,

You've kind of gotten stuck in here.

It just allow like a soap bubble to be right next to your head.

It's almost like any old communication set or unsaid.

It just kind of gets pulled out of your jaw.

And goes into this bubble.

I meant to say I love you to this person or I should have apologized or I never should have said that or I hold everything back.

Whatever it is,

Some tension in the jaw around your communication or maybe even down in your throat.

Just let some of that go out into a bubble.

You might even almost like see the words or see a color,

See an energy just like get pulled out.

You know,

When you go to the dentist and they give you a cleaning,

This is like that,

But I don't know,

Like a psychic energetic level.

You could pull out all the terrible things you've said in 20 seconds.

Pull out all the terrible things you've said in 2020.

Go into the new year without holding on to all of that.

Without any judgment or guilt,

If there is guilt,

Maybe it can go out into the bubble.

If there is judgment,

Maybe it can go out into the bubble too.

I over gossiped.

Let that go into the bubble as well.

I stayed silent when I should have spoke up.

Let that go out into the bubble as well.

You can take everything that you've said or meant to say,

Didn't wanna say in 2020,

Just let it go out into a bubble.

You can take everything that you've said or meant to say,

Didn't wanna say in 2020,

Just let it go out into a bubble.

And then I want you to just take this bubble,

Just kind of move it away from you.

I know we could probably fill it for a few hours.

Just whatever's ready to go,

Just kind of float that bubble away from your head,

Just pop it.

Just maybe you see like sprinkles or fireworks.

Just kind of let all that go.

Notice a little bit more space in your jaw,

Less tension here.

And then what I'd like you to do is just bring your awareness.

Make sure you're right in the center of your head,

Behind your eyes with your eyes closed.

We're gonna take a look at something together.

So be nice and focused here with me.

When I used to do Zen,

They would walk around and if you were falling asleep or not paying attention,

They would hit you on the shoulder with a stick.

I'm not gonna do that to you.

I'm just saying pay attention.

So right in your mind's eye,

I want you to take a look at a gauge from zero to 100,

From zero to 100,

Out of your entire ability to give,

Your ability to give to the world,

To people.

How much of that potential do you feel like you're fulfilling?

So it might look like a temperature gauge or gas gauge,

Zero to 100,

Out of all of your ability that you know you have inside you to give,

How much are you really doing and tapping into?

On average,

Of course.

Take a look at that for a moment.

And if you wanna share and then share what the number is,

You can write it in.

Yeah,

15,

60,

70,

15,

60 to 80,

60 to 70.

60 to 80,

60 to 70.

75,

50,

40,

75.

We got 100,

Good for you.

80,

Yeah.

So you're not alone.

You're very likely the majority of people who can deepen into giving more.

So I want you to take a look at,

Say,

If you're at 60%,

The other 40.

If you're at 80,

The other 20.

I want you to take a look.

What is it that's stopping you from getting the rest of it,

From really giving fully?

Is there anything that is stopping you,

Any energy or belief that's stopping you from going to 100?

Are you afraid of what people will think of being rejected?

Yeah,

Fear,

Inadequacy,

Laziness,

Lack of abundance,

Self-love,

Lack of self-love,

Exhaustion.

My tank is empty,

Yeah.

Other commitments and posture syndrome,

Failure,

Fear,

Abandonment.

COVID,

Yeah,

Feeling drained.

Afraid of being pushed over.

How about them Christmas presents?

I want you to have a little bit of lightness with whatever your thing or your issue is.

I'm not saying it's not serious,

But be a little bit lighthearted with it.

It's okay.

You're learning about yourself.

Right,

Afraid of being pushed away.

Yeah,

Somebody said,

Ho,

Ho,

Ho.

That's what we need.

Some lifting up energy with this.

So just take a moment here with me.

See if you can release some of this,

Almost like it drains out of the gauge.

Drain any of that fear,

Any of that rejection,

Any of that imposter syndrome out of the gauge.

And you do that,

The way you drain it out of the gauge,

Is you're not going to be able to do it.

The way you drain it out of the gauge is just by being real and super honest with it,

Letting yourself feel it,

And then recognizing if there's any judgment.

I'm afraid of rejection,

David.

And so it's frozen.

That energy's frozen there.

Can you have some compassion for yourself?

Let go of any of that fear of rejection,

Any of that judgment around the energy.

You might watch it drain off of you like a color or a liquid.

Just almost feel it coming out of you.

So let yourself be super honest with it.

As I said before,

We started meditating.

The path to successful meditation is through honesty.

So if you have to say to yourself,

Man,

I've been afraid of being an imposter for all these years.

I'm afraid of rejection.

Let yourself feel that.

Okay.

What's the worst that's going to happen in this moment?

You're just going to feel it as Robert Frost said,

The only way around is through.

Let yourself feel it for a moment,

Whatever that energy is.

It's probably familiar,

But maybe you've been avoiding it to some extent.

Make sure you're still breathing.

You might even learn to enjoy sitting with rejection or fear or whatever it is.

As you meditate more and more and get better at just being here with the energy,

You might go,

Oh,

This is kind of cool.

I'm uncovering stuff and it's not going to kill me.

It's okay.

It's okay.

This is what's actually helping you develop.

This isn't a problem or a detour.

This is your life path.

If you want to be a more giving person,

The path is to be honest with yourself.

The path is through rejection.

It's through fear.

It's not around it.

It's not in some other place.

This is it.

That is the hardest part sometimes about meditation and life in general is realizing,

Oh,

This is what I'm struggling with.

This is it.

This is my path.

And you might go,

Damn it,

David,

I don't want this to be it.

That's called resistance.

I want you to accept that as well.

If you look down at yourself and you feel shame,

That's your path.

If you feel judgment,

That's your path.

Whatever it is,

It's the simplest thing and it's the hardest thing to accept.

Take a big deep breath in.

Nice sigh out.

I want you to take wherever this giving gauge is,

Just put it aside and let's look at one together for receiving.

I want you to,

From 0 to 100,

Take a look at a gauge for your ability to receive.

On average,

Out of all your potential,

How much are you living up to,

How much you're able to truly receive.

Take a look at this for a moment.

If you want to share the number,

You're welcome to.

So these numbers,

Yeah,

15,

40,

12,

98,

60,

A lot of 40s,

A lot of 40s.

It doesn't matter if it's material or emotional,

Spiritual.

Just in general,

Your ability to go,

Oh,

I can have this.

I can receive something.

I'm worthy of receiving.

5,

35,

20,

10.

Yeah,

Let's take a look.

And then I want you again to look at,

If you're not at 100%,

What's keeping you from receiving?

Look at that for a moment.

What is keeping you from receiving?

And if you just stepped into this meditation with us,

We're just looking at what is keeping us from receiving.

Are you afraid of not being good enough,

A sense of self-worth,

That you'll get punished,

Pride,

Unworthiness,

I don't deserve it,

Low self-worth,

Afraid you won't be able to give back in return?

Yeah,

A lot of conditioning,

Self-esteem,

Expectations.

As a group,

Right now,

This is going to be the best Christmas present you can give yourself and the world.

Take the next couple minutes here.

I want you to see if you can get to 100% honesty and feeling with this.

David,

I feel like I'm not worthy of receiving.

Okay,

I want you to really look at that clearly and sit with it for a moment.

I want you to just feel it and own it.

I want you to even smile at it.

I'm sitting here with David and this beautiful group of people,

And I'm just feeling this fear,

Feeling this unworthiness.

Yeah,

Let yourself feel it.

The only way around it is through it.

Just be honest.

I don't want you to cover it up with the mantra of saying that you're worthy unless you truly feel it.

I want you to uncover it.

So we're not here to invent ourselves.

We're here to discover ourselves.

Okay,

There's a difference.

Your answer is inside this energy.

It's not outside of it.

It's in it.

So I want you to ask the energy what it's here to teach you.

What is this fear?

What is this unworthiness here to teach you?

Just clearly ask yourself that question and see what answer arises.

Yeah,

It's a big difference.

And I just want you to say it out loud.

Just some of you have said I'm worthy.

Instead of saying I'm worthy,

Maybe for a moment you say out loud,

I am not worthy.

And you just feel what that feels like.

It's just to feel what it feels like.

If you're already experiencing it anyway,

You might as well say it.

Are right now,

Say it out loud.

Whatever the thing is,

Say it out loud.

I judge myself.

I'm afraid.

I'm anxious.

I don't have confidence.

I'm conditioned.

I'm afraid to be vulnerable.

Say that out loud.

You're being vulnerable if you say that out loud.

People will be like,

David,

You're so calm and whatever.

Are you kidding?

Do you know how many layers of this I've had to work through to continue to?

It's not like you get struck by lightning and one day you wake up and you're perfect.

Perfectly enlightened.

Maybe one person out of a billion.

The rest of us have to sit here and do the work inside of ourselves.

That includes me.

Yeah,

Afraid of it,

That it won't last.

If you're wondering how you can feel more deeply,

Don't worry about that.

You just feel whatever it is that you feel.

Someone said I need to feel more grace and self-compassion.

Well,

That's kind of a judgment on yourself.

Let that go and say,

You know what,

I'm just going to feel the inadequacy.

I've never seen a person grow from being perfect.

I've only seen a person grow from working through stuff like this.

That is the whole point of being on earth.

We're here to learn to love and to grow.

Those two things.

To love and to grow.

We're going a few minutes over,

But I'm working you guys here.

See if this energy can start to drain off of the gauge.

Any energy that's keeping you from being able to receive,

You might even feel it draining off of your heart like a color or just a funky energy.

Maybe an image or a memory where someone convinced you weren't good enough to receive.

Maybe it just pops out.

Let the energy start to go.

Let yourself lose a whole bunch of psychic energetic weight.

Let it start to drop those weights.

Someone said,

I'm afraid of being seen as needy or weak.

If that's the case,

Say it out loud.

Say,

I feel needy and weak.

Say it out loud.

That's what's going to bring you strength.

Do you want people around you in your life who judge you for that or who are like,

Hey,

I feel needy and weak sometimes too?

I'm not going to judge you for it.

Now you're really giving and receiving love and compassion.

Be the person that you want other people to be around you as well.

Great work.

I want you to just take a look at these two gauges for a moment before we finish.

We've got one from 0 to 100 on how much you're able to give and the other 0 to 100 how much you're able to receive.

Obviously the average of it and how you feel right now.

Just take a moment.

I want you to feel your heart.

Just open your heart up.

Maybe there's a door that you just kind of open.

You're making a commitment to yourself that I am going to allow myself to give without expecting anything in return and to receive without needing to feel like I have to give.

To give without expecting anything in return and to receive without this feeling of needing to have to give.

Let yourself feel that in the center of your chest.

Giving and receiving.

There's an outward movement of energy and an inward movement.

Just like the breath.

Breathe in and you breathe out.

Exygen,

You breathe it out.

You receive,

You give.

You give,

You receive.

That is the balance of life.

That is how life works.

During the holiday,

I want you to see if you can focus on this energetically.

Really focus on your heart center.

Maybe in conversation with another person.

Am I really in a true energy of giving and receiving?

Just let it flow.

If somebody is mean or racist or whatever,

Somebody was asking,

Can you give compassion?

Obviously,

They're in a consciousness that's not super healthy.

Obviously,

They're in pain.

Can you have compassion?

Can you give compassion?

There we go.

Giving and receiving.

Let it start to flow.

Lastly,

I'm going to do one more piece here.

I want you just to imagine a beautiful red rose right out in front of you.

This is how we're going to give.

I want you to just fill it with the energy of love and compassion.

Just almost like it comes out of your heart,

Right into the rose.

Just this warm,

Caring acceptance.

Let it fill the rose up.

Let this rose almost glow like a golden energy is kind of making a hue around the rose.

Then I want this rose to multiply a whole bunch of times.

Maybe there's 10,

20,

30 of these roses.

A couple dozen.

Just filled with gold,

Filled with love and acceptance.

You know how they say you can light a thousand candles from one candle?

Same with these roses.

Then I want you to just fill it with the energy of love and compassion.

Just fill it with love and acceptance.

Just let it go out to everybody that you know.

I want you to imagine it just touching each of their hearts.

That rose going right into each person's heart.

Family,

Friends,

Coworkers.

Maybe someone you've been struggling with.

Allow yourself to just give love to everyone around you.

This is the best present you're going to be able to give.

Then I'd like you to create one more rose.

Just fill it with love and acceptance.

I want you to fill it with love and compassion,

Acceptance.

It takes its own life.

It has an energy and an essence to it.

Then I want you to take this rose and send it right into the center of your own chest.

I want you to give to yourself.

I want you to be able to receive it.

Give this love to yourself.

Feel this love just like emanating through your entire body.

Really give it to yourself.

Whether anybody else gives it to you or not,

You can give it to yourself.

Let this feeling of love come out to you.

Let this feeling of acceptance and self-compassion come out to your body.

You're not loving and accepting yourself because you're good or you're bad or you're at your best or at your worst.

You're doing it no matter what because you exist.

You have value because you exist.

The infinite wisdom of creation has decided to create you in this form,

Billions of years of physical evolution to create you in this form with your consciousness and your history and your story and your life.

It's decided to create this and here you are.

Can you appreciate that and own it and love it?

What a beautiful creation.

Trillions of cells inside your body are working so hard right now.

The sun is beaming energy to the earth.

The plants are growing.

Everything around you is nurturing this experience for you so you can have this conscious human life and feel love.

Own it.

I want you to really own it.

You don't love yourself because of anything.

Just love yourself because you exist.

Like I said in the beginning,

The best present is presence.

It truly is.

If you can be present for yourself and or for others,

That is the best present.

Make somebody else feel like they can be seen.

You can be present for yourself and or for others.

That is the best present.

You can be present for yourself and or for others.

That is the best present.

Make somebody else feel like they can be seen.

Take a nice big deep breath in.

Easy soft sigh out.

Great job.

This was an enlightening meditation because I now know where they shortfalls are in me giving and receiving. In receiving the limiting belief of โ€œI am not worthyโ€ can be active. In giving which I mainly attribute to โ€˜moneyโ€™, the limiting belief of โ€œI do not have the capacityโ€ can often be active. The fact is that this is not true because I give attention, acceptance and approval to people where possible and appropriate. I feel so much better since doing this meditation .๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

The participants in this live meditation mostly covered the range of reasons for limiting giving and receiving. Still, I wanted to share, too. I feel depleted from a lifetime of teaching. I donโ€™t know what else I have to give. Iโ€™m getting better at being on the receiving end of life. Age has a way of forcing your hand there, doesnโ€™t it?
