Welcome back to our Sleep Well series and to this meditation called,

I Can't Sleep!

Exclamation point.

Or with an emoji of someone pulling their hair out.

We've all been there.

And perhaps in this meditation tonight,

You'll allow some of that energy that's not letting you sleep to melt off.

So you can actually have a good night's rest.

So you can start to close your eyes and relax.

Or maybe I'll just bore you to sleep.

Maybe I'll tell you my autobiography.

I was born a baby,

Like most people.

And I acted like a baby until I was 30.

Little amusement and humor as we go to bed.

Take some nice deep breaths all the way into your body.

Let your body start to melt into the bed.

And if you've been trying to relax and trying to go to sleep and you can't,

You might find there's a little bit of resistance or frustration in your body.

Maybe your mind is very excited.

You might have a level of stress or anxiety.

Don't fight it.

Just let it be that it's there.

Just start to relax your muscles.

Maybe you're just so fired up about your life that you don't want to sleep because you don't want to miss anything.

Or you're stressed because you feel a little bit off your path.

Sometimes we think it's one thing but it turns out to be another.

Oh,

I was really upset about this person saying that to me but when I look deeper it was really about my life path.

Let's say hello to what's keeping us up.

It's always something.

Where is it?

Let's start with the question of where is it?

Where is it in your body?

If you were to kind of check out your own space,

Your own body and to see a place that's lighting up,

That's bothering you.

Is there an issue in your heart?

In your head?

Your lower back?

Have you been holding up the world on your shoulders?

And you could feel it in your shoulders?

Have you been overthinking?

Is it in your head?

Maybe there's nervousness in your stomach or choking in your throat.

Just acknowledge where it is.

As you start to find that place,

Just allow it to be there.

Maybe something needs to resolve itself before you can go to sleep.

You know what?

I've been so angry at this person.

What I really need to do is just sit and write out all my grievances even if I never tell them.

I've been so worried about tomorrow.

You might notice the energy in your head.

The first step is to be aware of what it is.

You really be honest with that.

Maybe you won't get to sleep for another hour or a few hours or all night,

But you can resolve this one thing.

And if you avoid resolving this one thing,

You won't sleep.

Or you can try to knock yourself out into a coma of sleep,

But avoiding what's keeping you awake.

But if you're in this meditation,

You're probably willing to say hello to it.

So the first step is noticing it.

And the second step is to not overthink.

So stop trying to solve it.

And just take a step back.

What if you couldn't solve it?

What if you could do nothing but look at it and just be with it?

So any overthinking,

Just let that go.

A computer might be able to beat you in chess,

But it can't find the meaning of life.

That analyzing part of your brain,

That computer side of your mind,

That thinks through problems.

It might not be its job to resolve this.

There might be something deeper.

Just if it was like a switch,

Turn off a light.

Just turn that over analyzing part of you off.

And the third step is to not take it so seriously.

Yes,

You might not get enough sleep.

But it's not the end of the world.

Only the end of the world is the end of the world.

No,

There's probably worse things that have happened.

And you're here because you're learning from this situation on some level.

So lighten up about it.

And the fourth step is don't be too hard on yourself.

Maybe if you've been hard on yourself for not sleeping,

For feeling agitated,

Ease up.

You're not perfect and the part of you that thinks about how you're not perfect isn't perfect either.

And the fifth step is just starting to forgive yourself.

We hold ourselves in judgment when we don't feel well or can't sleep.

And it perpetuates it.

You didn't do anything wrong.

There's nothing wrong with you.

Just forgive yourself and give yourself space.

Make sure you're breathing.

Make sure the room is dark.

Your space is quiet.

You can feel your body weight against the bed.

And just like there's a gravity that keeps us on earth and pulls us down,

There's a gravity in the evening that pulls us into sleep.

You don't have to do anything.

You just have to stop fighting it so much.

Allow that sleep gravity to start to pull you down into sleep.

And the last step is just to open the gates to sleep.

Invite sleep in.

Sleep belongs to a different part of you.

A thinking mind doesn't really understand what it means.

Sleep is its own dimension,

Its own world.

It's made of silence and stillness and depth,

Darkness and rest.

It's comfort and a place of feeling at home,

At sleep,

In a soft bed,

In a warm place,

In a safe environment.

This is where we spend a third of our lives regenerating,

Dreaming,

Growing,

Being and having.

Notice how every cell in your body is going to sleep.

Your eyes are closed.

Your mind is slowing down.

And you're gently melting into that calm,

Empty,

Deep space.

This place where your conscious and your unconscious mind come together,

Where you have freedom to move,

Freedom to feel,

Freedom to know yourself.

And there's no one but you.

Notice your body's really relaxed,

Calm and happy.

You're leaving this world behind and you're stepping into the next one.

And ultimately sleep is about rest.

Deep,

Deep rest.

Moving back to the source of creation so that you can be born again in the morning.

Just like the sun crosses the sky and takes a rest and comes back.

So do you.

Be gentle as you cross the threshold into sleep and go to sleep with intention.

Now back to the analysis.

Give yourself courage.
