In this practice, David Gandelman explores humility as a way of loosening the mind’s grip on certainty. Instead of rushing toward conclusions, he invites you to soften, stay curious, and allow space for perspectives you may not have considered. Through grounding breath and quiet attention, this meditation helps you shift from needing answers to noticing what unfolds when you stay open. You’ll leave with an intention to guide your day: Today, I’ll stay open instead of assuming I know.

Welcome to Day 28 of Insight Timer's Intention Setting Challenge.

Setting an intention is making a decision about who you want to be and how you choose to show up.

Over time,

Those choices become change.

Let's begin.

Hello and welcome to Insight Timer's Intention Setting Challenge.

I'm David Gandelman,

And today we're going to be working on an essential energy for setting intention and having a deep meditation practice,

Which is humility.

And humility isn't just about shrinking yourself or pretending you don't know anything.

Humility is about being open,

Curious,

And not jumping to conclusions.

And as we close our eyes today in meditation,

You might notice that tendency of wanting or needing to find an answer or bring something to a conclusion.

But instead,

Humility asks us to soften our inner certainty,

To let go of being right,

And to make some space for new information,

For new perspectives,

And even the possibility that life in its infinite mystery and wisdom has something else to offer us that we didn't expect.

So with that,

Let's go into meditation.

And you can gently close your eyes,

Deepen your breath,

Perhaps you drop your shoulders,

Soften your hands.

So our intention for today is,

Today I'll stay open instead of assuming I know.

Take a moment here with me and see if you can feel the quality of that energy,

Of that intention.

Today,

I'll stay open instead of assuming I know.

So if there's something in your life,

An answer you've been looking for,

Something you want to bring to a conclusion,

Perhaps something you have too hard of a perspective on or opinion.

As you sit here with me,

As you relax into your body,

Can you just loosen your grip on that feeling of needing a conclusion or having a perspective?

Instead,

Just see if you can be in a more open space,

Widen that field of consciousness,

Even sense that existential mystery of life.

No matter how much information we have,

Life is inexhaustible.

And instead of fighting that current,

Just let your energy be open to it.

Perhaps life wants to show you something today.

And as you move through your day,

Notice the moments when your mind wants to jump to conclusions about a person,

A situation,

Or even yourself.

Perhaps you can pause,

Take a deep breath,

And just be a bit more open to what's actually present.

And remember your intention.

Today,

I'll stay open instead of assuming I know.

On the next few screens,

You'll be invited to set this intention or your own version of it.

On your Insight Timer home screen.

The simple act of seeing your intention reflected back throughout the day might be enough to create some change.

Good luck with the rest of the challenge,

And I'll see you soon.

Thank you David. I've been struggling with a stressor the pat 2 days. I get stuck in why did that have to happen and I want it to be over as quick as possible- the controlling part of myself. Instead of realizing that it happened, I'm dealing with it. Stuff happrns and to be kind and compassionate toward myelf. Humility recognizes these thing and that restful patience and uncoditional regard for myself softens everything around it. Thank you for the percetual shift David.

I was apprehensive about "humility" as a topic because I've been beating up on myself a lot already. So, surprised and grateful that the core of it was staying open and not creating conclusions. It turned out to be something I really needed. The teacher has a very calm and even voice. I really appreciated having a closing bell on today's meditation 🙏🏽
