Hello,
And welcome to this mindful cooking practice.
Most of us cook at least once a day.
Often,
Many of us attend to this task with dread.
This is a moment where you can stop and reframe how you approach this simple task of nurturing yourself,
Of being kind to yourself.
My goal is to help you find connection,
Creativity,
Curiosity,
Confidence,
And calm in the kitchen.
And as someone who's been teaching for 27 years,
I know this is possible.
If you are ready to cook,
Gather your ingredients.
If not,
You can use this as a practice for when you do.
Take a moment,
Check in with yourself.
How are you feeling?
Are you excited,
Nervous,
Agitated,
Or inspired?
Choose an ingredient.
I like to choose an herb or spices placed in a bowl.
Close your eyes,
If that's comfortable.
And rub the herbs or spices between your fingertips.
What does it feel like?
Bring your hands towards your nose and take a deep breath.
What does it smell like?
Open your eyes.
If you can,
Taste the herb or the spice,
Savoring the flavor on your tongue.
What does it taste like?
How does it feel?
Does it make your tongue tingle?
I want you to think about the ingredients that you're going to be using.
And think about what needs to be washed or not.
And then when you're ready,
Wash your ingredients.
Feeling the cool water cascade over your hands,
Knowing you are about to prepare a nourishing meal for yourself,
And perhaps others.
When you are ready to begin slicing,
Chopping or mincing your vegetables,
You want to do so in a really calm and slow manner.
Taking care to be mindful of your thoughts,
Movements,
And the sensations around you.
Feel the weight and the texture of each ingredient.
Notice the colors,
The shapes,
And the intricacies of what you're preparing.
Listen to the sounds as the knife slices against the cutting board,
And the crunch or the snap of your produce.
Feel the rhythm of your own breath,
The rise and fall of your chest,
And let that guide the pace of your movements.
If your mind starts to wander to where your day has been,
Or your to do list,
Or what's next,
Gently bring your focus back to the present moment,
To the act of cooking,
To the sensations in your hands,
And to the sense in the air.
As you move on to cooking,
Whether it's sauteing,
Boiling,
Or baking,
Immerse yourself in this process.
Hear the sizzle as the ingredients hit the hot pan,
Or the gentle bubbling of a simmering pot.
Watch the colors and textures change as they cook,
Transforming into something new.
Notice the warmth from the stove or the oven,
And the way the kitchen atmosphere shifts as you progress.
Feel the steam against your face,
The way the heat envelops you.
There is something almost magical about the transformation that happens in cooking.
Embrace that.
As you finish up,
Take a moment to express gratitude for the farmers who planted,
Watered,
Nurtured,
Harvested the food,
For the truck drivers who transported this food,
For the grocery store workers who put it on the shelves,
Checked you out,
But also to yourself.
Give yourself a moment of gratitude and grace,
And for your ability to prepare this food,
And for the opportunity to nourish yourself and others.
Set the table with intention,
Appreciating the final presentation of your meal.
As you eat,
Take the time to taste each bite,
Savoring the flavors,
Textures,
And the love and mindfulness you put into each dish.
Thank you for allowing yourself this mindful experience in the kitchen.
May every meal you prepare be an act of love,
And caring,
Mindfulness,
And nurturing,
Not just your body,
But your soul.
You've now completed this mindful cooking meditation.
Remember the kitchen can be a sanctuary,
A place of connection and calm,
Every time you choose to enter it with presence and intention.
Thank you for joining me.
I look forward to being with you again.
