Welcoming the Unwelcome: A Practice for Anxiety and Grief

With Rod Janz

Theme: Learning to pray and meditate through life and suffering. We often view anxiety and grief as enemies to be managed or avoided. Yet, peace is rarely found by bypassing our pain but by navigating directly through it. As Thomas Keating taught, the Welcoming Prayer serves as an excellent companion for this journey, offering a practical way to engage with difficult feelings the moment they arise in the midst of daily life.** In this live session, we explore a somatic practice of "consent." Developed by Mary Mrozowski, this method invites us to stop fighting our internal state and instead surrender to the present moment. By welcoming whatever arises, including the "unwelcome" visitors of grief and worry, we allow Spirit to begin the work of transformation. What we will experience together: *The Body’s Wisdom: We move from the "deceiving mind" into the body, where truth resides. *The Three Movements: We will practice the core steps of Feel and Sink In, Welcome, and Let Go. *Dismantling the False Self, or the ego's control: Learn to release the "energy centers" (security, approval, and control) that fuel our emotional upsets. *Guided Practice: We'll practice the Welcoming Prayer and focus on a dominating thought or emotion that arises for you during the session. Join us as we learn to stop safeguarding our "illusionary identities" and open ourselves to the healing action of grace within. **Note:** While this practice uses traditional 'God' language, I invite you to join me in exploring and adapting these terms as I also continue to seek language for the Divine that resonates most deeply.
