Opening Beyond "Just Stuff": Maps, Mystery, and Mundane Physics

With Mackenzie

What is it about quantum that lets us feel like physics gives us permission to view stuff as not just plain old mechanical stuff? One of the limitations that come up for people with a body-centered practice is that we can have associations with the body as, you know, “it's just the body”—and that blocks our fuller feeling of the magic of being a human being. So what if we humbly say what we don’t know? We don’t know if the miracle of consciousness is just physicalism. And even physicists say nobody really understands quantum—so we don’t need to grab hold of a mystery to justify our more mysterious meditative and spiritual experiences. What I’ve so appreciated about the teachings of physicist and tai chi master Wonchull Park is that he shows how we can use mundane, well-established physics to open up our perception. For example, what if esoteric Taoist alchemy can be paired with “permission” from so-far-as-we-know universal ways that Nature flows from physics? For some of us at least, it's easier to feel when it makes sense. As Master Park says, “The map is not the terrain,” but we use our “maps” to open more to the terrain as it actually is. In these hour-long guided explorations, we’ll see what it might be like to truly honor the mystery while making our maps just a little bit better, to open to that richness, that lies “on the other side” of thinking, “oh, I know my physical body--it’s just stuff.”
